Questions & Answers

weight of fencing materials

I need to know how much 20 2x4x8's and 110 5/8"x5.5"x6' dog ear pickets weigh? Will they all go into a Ford Ranger?
Asked by: woodie
There might be too much weight for one trip. Those two by fours will probably be very wet and heavy. Also 110 pickets will take up a lot of bedspace. Look at a full bundle or "skid" of pickets to see how much space they take up. Count out 110 of them to see how much space you need.

I am going to build an outdoor cat enclosure to house street cats. Is the chemicals used in this wood toxic if cats scratch or when wet.

Asked by: Alex
Possibly. Get someone to help you with the design. There are much better choices for materials which are cheaper and better suited for what you are doing.

can I build a roof over my deck with this wood?

can 2 x 4 x 8 and 2 x 4 x 12 be used for a roof over a deck
Asked by: kathy
You really don't need pressure-treated lumber for the trusses, rafters, and other framework because they will be covered by the roof. Unless the lumber will be exposed to rain and weather it is better to avoid the pressure treated lumber. It is more expensive and the chemicals in pressure-treated lumber are hazardous. It really should not be sanded and cutting should be kept to a minimum.

can this be installed with 2' underground and set in cement?

I am thinking about using this for a small fence
Asked by: booklover
Yes but a 4 x 4 would be better for the fence posts. A great deal depends on your location. Humidity, snow, sun, rain and wind load are critical factors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have purchased and used these baords for many projects, and they've allways done exactly what i needed them too. I will soon purchase these boards agian as materials in my Eagle Scout Service Project. I recommend these items to everyone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Expect Frustration Plan on spending more time than you should shopping through a gigantic stack of lumber for a few decent pieces. Very frustrating and time consuming. Many are warped, which is bad enough but quite a few were just unbelievably poor quality. You couldn't build dog house safely with some of this wood. Chunks missing, damage etc. CANNOT be any level of quality control on this product. Home Depot HAS to find another supplier on this. The 2x 6 etc are OK but the 2 x 4's are a waste. Cant post pictures of the wood because the site is blocking me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not very good Mine warped and cupped badly AFTER installation, despite being nailed and glued down. Wouldn't buy again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Some good material Found much of this product to be of low quality. Had to sort through a large stack to find a few usable items. Not really what I expected from premium lumber.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from As advertised Wood was still really wet when I purchased it. It was nice and straight but if you let it dry out before it's installed it will warp and twist. I used plastics sheets to cover it until installation. If it's drying at the store and starting to warp I would avoid it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not the best quality. I needed to purchase 10 of these 2x4's. To find the 10 pieces I needed I had to sort through 30 pieces. They claim they are # 2 grade which is very questionable. Additionally HD needs to cull out the really bad pieces. The worst part is I only need these boards for utility work so less than perfect boards are okay but to even find half way descent ones took me a lot of time. I would normally buy on line and pick up in store to save time but due to past experience if you buy these on line they pull the worst ones for your order. Not very happy with this product. In addition to many huge knots they are not cut straight and just about every one had split ends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good product prime quality wood, a little over price usually you don't have to check one by one, stud by stud like other kind of wood stud lower quality, because this pressure treated wood is 98% clean and in good shape, you are not going to see holes or curves in the kind of studs. Most of the time people use the pressure treated lumber for the out side jobs, like decking, etc. but I recommend to use this for all ( Inside & Outside ) because you don't have to worry about termites and moisture like some places in your house, the bathrooms as an example, or maybe a roof structure will extend the life time with this kind of lumber.
