Questions & Answers

weight of fencing materials

I need to know how much 20 2x4x8's and 110 5/8"x5.5"x6' dog ear pickets weigh? Will they all go into a Ford Ranger?
Asked by: woodie
There might be too much weight for one trip. Those two by fours will probably be very wet and heavy. Also 110 pickets will take up a lot of bedspace. Look at a full bundle or "skid" of pickets to see how much space they take up. Count out 110 of them to see how much space you need.

I am going to build an outdoor cat enclosure to house street cats. Is the chemicals used in this wood toxic if cats scratch or when wet.

Asked by: Alex
Possibly. Get someone to help you with the design. There are much better choices for materials which are cheaper and better suited for what you are doing.

can I build a roof over my deck with this wood?

can 2 x 4 x 8 and 2 x 4 x 12 be used for a roof over a deck
Asked by: kathy
You really don't need pressure-treated lumber for the trusses, rafters, and other framework because they will be covered by the roof. Unless the lumber will be exposed to rain and weather it is better to avoid the pressure treated lumber. It is more expensive and the chemicals in pressure-treated lumber are hazardous. It really should not be sanded and cutting should be kept to a minimum.

can this be installed with 2' underground and set in cement?

I am thinking about using this for a small fence
Asked by: booklover
Yes but a 4 x 4 would be better for the fence posts. A great deal depends on your location. Humidity, snow, sun, rain and wind load are critical factors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent quality A little difficult finding not warped or split pieces when selecting wood, but once we got passed that, they were very decent

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Acclimation is absolutely necessary I've bought a fair amount of 2x4 stock over the last month. I've built an 8x10 shed base/floor and a work table. It's true that you'll find a lot of warped and [primarily] bowed/cupped stock in the store, but thats the standard for buying stock from a "big box" store. I didn't have to pick long until I found stock I wanted. I also don't care much about bowing or cupping if I'm going to chop the piece up into smaller lengths- just make sure to set that piece aside for the purpose. The treated lumber was practically wet at the time of pickup. Before building, I stacked the lumber outside (but underneath an eave), where it stayed for a couple of days. I stacked it up on 1'' stickers, allowing for space on the sides of the boards as well. I rotated a couple of pieces after a day. This corrected the bowing. So if you have the time, I'd recommend doing this. At the very least, acclimation is an absolute must- the wood has been sitting stacked with other damp wood in a 75 degree store. If you take it home and immediately frame a wall outside, where it's 95 degrees and 10% humidity (as it is here in the Panhandle), the wood WILL contract, move, and damage the structure. A little preparation is all you need.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from pressure treated lumber for deck I found the lumber for my deck at Home Depot. It was pressure treated and perfect for the small deck we built in front of our garden shop. the price was fair, the lumber was good and in good length of 10 and 12 feet, and only cost us 35 dollars to build it. It was also very easy to order it online and it was ready for pickup that day! I highly recommend Home Depot for all your lumber needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Anodized aluminum with ACQ The best metal to use with ACQ treated lumber is stainless steel. Good, high quality, galvanized steel fasteners are acceptable. Anodized aluminum would be iffy and would depend primarily on the specific application and how good (thick and well bonded) the anodized process is. Plain aluminium corrodes easily especially if there is any electrolysis activity. If you are using this lumber for a deck, I would strongly recommend that you go to a 2x6 or a "deck board" for the deck floor. It will work much better and will actually cost less all things considered. Be sure to turn the grain "bowl" down
