Preventative Maintenance Plan

1. Depending on the location of your outdoor project with regard to direct sun exposure, foliage coverage, etc., it may be sufficient to clean/brighten and recoat every two years. 2. If you decide to wait two or more years to perform your next cleaning/brightening, you may want to use a power washer. Be sure that the cleaner/brightener you use contains a mildewcide.

Choosing The Right Stain Or Paint

When determining the right stain and paint for your deck, consider what color will best enhance the wood's finish.

Paint or Stain Tips

If you desire to paint or stain the treated wood project, it is important that the wood be dry enough to accept a coating. The best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

Pressure-Treated Southern Yellow Pine meets the highest grading standards for strength and appearance. Color-infused, so pigment is driven deep into wood fibers, creating beauty that's guaranteed to stand up to the elements for years. Treated for protection against fungal decay, rot and termites, it is ideal for ground contact and a variety of general uses including exposed structures, sill plates, decks, docks, ramps and other outdoor applications.Treated wood is typically still wet when it’s delivered to The Home Depot or job site. As it dries, you should expect slight changes in width and length. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp. This is more likely to occur to occur in lower-grade boards, where knots and uneven grains are already present. Each piece of lumber is unique and carries physical characteristics that may include the following: knots, warping, shrinkage, swelling and/or splitting.

What is the average weight of this board?

Roughly 50# per board. This will vary depending on how "green/wet" the wood is when purchased. Our experience is that the wood is pretty "green/wet" at the store.

Does this warp as bad as it sounds?

This product was suggested by the staff at HD even though my deck is 10 feet in the air on the sunny south side of the house. The first few boards went down OK, but the further along I got on the deck the harder it was to get the boards to fit well. I usually had to use two bar clamps to get the board straight. Since finishing, the edges and ends have curled. About a third of my deck is a tripping hazard. One board curled about 3 inches in 16 inches. It broke the two 3" screws I had to hold it down. I'm ashamed of my deck. If I could afford it I would rip this wood out and start over with something better. So I guess the answer to your question is: No, it actually warps worse then it sounds.

The only reason for good and not excellent is that I had to hand pick the boards to get the good quality. I have a really large deck and had to come back 3 times for additional wood so I got used to what to look for. So many were warped or really damaged which I didn't want for my deck. Wood is in a shortage and I think that is the reason that certain batches of wood that came in were not all always top quality.
