Preventative Maintenance Plan

1. Depending on the location of your outdoor project with regard to direct sun exposure, foliage coverage, etc., it may be sufficient to clean/brighten and recoat every two years. 2. If you decide to wait two or more years to perform your next cleaning/brightening, you may want to use a power washer. Be sure that the cleaner/brightener you use contains a mildewcide.

Choosing The Right Stain Or Paint

When determining the right stain and paint for your deck, consider what color will best enhance the wood's finish.

Paint or Stain Tips

If you desire to paint or stain the treated wood project, it is important that the wood be dry enough to accept a coating. The best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

Pressure-Treated Southern Yellow Pine meets the highest grading standards for strength and appearance. This double treated Ground Contact lumber must be used for applications where treated lumber is difficult to maintain, repair or replace. Treated lumber is critical to the performance and safety of an entire system or construction such as deck joists, beams and ledger boards. An additional benefit of treated lumber is its defense against rot and insect infestation for its vast majority of applications. Southern yellow pine is responsibly manufactured, safe, and environmentally friendly when used as directed.Treated wood is typically still wet when it’s delivered to The Home Depot or job site. As it dries, you should expect slight changes in width and length. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp. This is more likely to occur to occur in lower-grade boards, where knots and uneven grains are already present. Each piece of lumber is unique and carries physical characteristics that may include the following: knots, warping, shrinkage, swelling and/or splitting.
  • Made of southern yellow pine
  • Ground Contact treated lumber can be used in both Above Ground and Ground Contact exterior applications
  • Backed by a lifetime limited warranty against termite infestation and rot

I'm really struggling with the width factors of this product. I bought six 16 ft long boards to replace six old boards on my deck. The old boards are 5" wide. These new boards ranged between 5 5/8" and 5 3/4". I brought my old boards in to Home Depot and was told that this is the product to replace them with. As of now they will not even fit in the empty spaces on my deck. I let them spend a day outside in the sun (propped up) and have since brought them into the house (propped up) and have been using fans on them. Are they going to shrink down to at least 5 1/4" and how long should it take while they are drying inside the house?
Asked by: Lu
It would take years to shrink down that much. So I suggest not to wait. If you have access to a table saw or s skil saw with a fence you can rip them down. Either do just the last one to fit, or do the all to get a uniform look.

Im replacing a few deck boards and need to paint the whole deck quickley. How do i prep for it, and should i use this wood or the non treated kind?

Asked by: Scott
Personally, I use 5/4 deck board to build my decks just seems to last longer. Using 2x6's I would buy non-treated and use this. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Olympic-Elite-1-gal-Base-1-Solid-Advanced-Exterior-Stain-and-Sealant-in-One-80301-01/305230159 Gotta love a lifetime guarantee. Cut wood to size, apply the sealant to all sides except the top side if you're going to do the rest of the deck paying close attention to the grainy ends. When nailing it down I like to toenail the nails, rent a floor sander and sand the deck. Once you have cleaned off the deck apply the sealant using a little extra in the nail holes just to make sure. If your budget permits, you can also use a non-slip rubberized/texture coating for safety. https://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-Advanced-DeckOver-1-gal-SC-111-Wood-Chip-Textured-Solid-Color-Exterior-Wood-and-Concrete-Coating-500501/308486720 I use 3m's safety walk tape on steps and ramps just to make sure the more seasoned folks that will use them are good and safe. I live by the woods and my deck can get slimy at the worst of times, those strips saved my bacon more than once headed out to work in the morning.

I replaced a few boards on my deck with this product. After the drying/waiting period I plan to stain/seal all of the boards (old and new) together. These new boards are a little bit thicker than the old boards, thus are a little bit raised above the rest. Can I take an orbital sander to this product just before I'm ready to stain/seal, particularly focusing on the edges that meet up with thinner/older boards?
Asked by: Lu
You do not want to sand them. This wood is infused with a liquid chemical that prevents rotting and insect damage. In the next week or two the liquid will evaporate out and the wood will shrink some. This may make enough difference and may not stick up so much. I would give it some time and see. Sanding will take hours and will not have a good result, you will wish you hadn’t. Good luck!
