Choosing The Right Stain Or Paint

When determining the right stain and paint for your deck, consider what color will best enhance the wood's finish.

Paint or Stain Tips

If you desire to paint or stain the treated wood project, it is important that the wood be dry enough to accept a coating. The best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

Pressure-Treated Pine meets the highest grading standards for strength and appearance. This double treated Ground Contact lumber must be used for applications where treated lumber is difficult to maintain, repair or replace. Treated lumber is critical to the performance and safety of an entire system or construction such as deck joists, beams and ledger boards. An additional benefit of treated lumber is its defense against rot and insect infestation for its vast majority of applications. Southern yellow pine is responsibly manufactured, safe, and environmentally friendly when used as directed.Treated wood is typically still wet when it’s delivered to The Home Depot or job site. As it dries, you should expect slight changes in width and length. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp. This is more likely to occur to occur in lower-grade boards, where knots and uneven grains are already present. Each piece of lumber is unique and carries physical characteristics that may include the following: knots, warping, shrinkage, swelling and/or splitting.
  • Made of pine
  • Ground Contact treated lumber can be used in both Above Ground and Ground Contact exterior applications
  • Backed by a lifetime limited warranty against termite infestation and rot
  • 5/4 in. x 6 in. x 10 ft.
  • Must use Ground Contact pressure treated lumber where lumber is at risk for poor air circulation, less than six inches from the ground, or has poor or no water drainage below the structure
  • Ground Contact treated lumber should be used in tropical climates or applications likely to have prolonged contact with vegetation or leaf litter
  • Ideal for a variety of general uses including exposed structures, sill plates, decks, docks, ramps and other outdoor applications
  • Uniform thickness, density and appearance for stable and long lasting performance
  • Hot-dip galvanized fasteners are recommended
  • Individual pieces of pressure treated lumber will reference Ground Contact on the end tag
  • WeatherShield includes water repellant in the treatment process
  • No two pieces of lumber are the same.
  • Color, grain pattern and texture will vary as well.
  • Use standard grade lumber is a rustic appearance is desired with your lumber project

Im building a 10 by 10 deck how many of these 5/4 by 6 by 10 boards should i get?

Asked by Mateo May 29, 2020

Hi Mateo, Thanks for your question. Assuming a 1/4" gap between each board it will take 21 boards to span 10 feet with the last board being cut to approximately 5" wide. Buy a few extra boards for treads if you plan on building steps up to your deck. Good luck with your project.

Do you get a price break in quantity

Asked by Carly March 29, 2020

They have contractor pricing on many items. Typically you won't find a discount on boards though. They do have better rates for large quantity of many of the items you will need for a Deck.

What spacing do I use for a deck when they’re still wet from the store? No spacing, 1/16”, etc?? I want 1/8” at the end.

Asked by RocRick September 19, 2019

No space is needed.they will shrink as they dry and give you a gap.

How heavy is this board?

Asked by Teddy September 11, 2019

Not very heavy easy to carry

What is the actual width ?

Asked by JD April 14, 2018

The best & most accurate source for information on dimensions, specifications, product SDS, etc. can easily be found on the HD website under "Specifications"; it provides the "nominal dimensions" & "ACTUAL" dimensions. Cheers!

What is the 5/4 description?

Product was straight and good quality. Now the kid that was running the saw couldn’t cut a board to save his life. Ended up with various cuts and had to correct the cuts which added time to my project

Just be aware that Home Depot will not honor your warranty on treated wood it you do not keep every little tab on the end of the board. We had some rot and they will not honor warranty. So just be aware.

Will have to wait to see how the deck boards hold up over time. There were more knot holes and bad edges than I would like but if you pick and choose your boards when purchased, you should be OK. A few boards were really floppy and deflected more than desired between the under frame cross members so these were replaced immediately with a stiffer board. It has only been installed for a couple of weeks so it will be ten years before I can say how good they hold up.

I was very happy to see most of the boards I was inspecting were pretty straight and not curved/bowed. Along with that, most of the boards did not have many knots in them. For every 5 boards I pulled from HD's shelf rack, 1 would fail my inspection (board was either bowed or not straight cut). I purchased 22 of them to build a small 10'x10' deck over the concrete slab on my backporch patio. Water & Mud washes over the slab each time it rains heavily, so I build this floating deck so I can sit out back and enjoy.
