How do you safely get to the top of the peak to fasten the anchor? More importantly, how do you get down from the peak with the anchor disconnected?
Asked by: Don
I threw a string over the roof. I used the string to pull a rope. I then attached the rope to a solid anchor on the other side of the house (tow hitch on a truck). The anchor included in the kit would then be an additional anchor positioned wherever you want it.

What is "restriction-free" about this roofing safety system as compared with other kits, e.g., Werner's own UpGear K211201 roofing safety system?
Asked by: AC
It appeared to me that the main difference is: That the clamping response mechanism on the main 50ft rope simply travels UP hill or DOWN hill with you, hands free, not needing to adjust it with your hand as you walk up or down hill slowly. This can be an immense asset when doing heavy roof work. Having an extra hand, that is. I may be incorrect, but I believe on the lesser priced one you have to always adjust it by hand as you travel.

If I am 120Lbs and 5"6, will I be able to use this product.

Asked by: Ken
Yes...it's heavy duty but also heavy....the hook on your back is noticeable when you wear it. Harness is comfortable though.

can the anchor be a permanent install?

Asked by: Brian15530
Yes. If you do not want to move the anchor, just leave it in place. But you may want to purchase a much more weather resistant anchor point if this is a long term install. Home Depot has several types of permanent anchors, ranging from straps to rigid plate steel. Search the Home Depot website for "roof anchor".

Customer Reviews

UpGear Restriction-Free Roofing Safety System is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fall Safety Kit This is a quality fall protection safety kit in a bucket. Being a "bucket man", I like that the entire contents come in a 2.5 gallon bucket with lid and it all fits back into the bucket after being removed. Everything was easy to use but I did have some difficulty figuring out how to put on the body harness because the instruction manual was not very clear and did not have adequate illustrations but it turned out that the picture on the side of the bucket was all I needed. I used the rope that secures around my chimney but it also comes with a hinged bracket that bolts down to any wooden structure with lag bolts provided. The harness has a ring on the back that easily clips to the safety rope. There is also a "fall indicator" section on the strap which serves as a "shock" absorber to break a fall and prevent injury. I do not like heights, especially working from heights so this will be used when I am doing work on the roof or from the side of my house.

We got solar panels a couple of years ago....and contrary to what some people have said they perform much better when they are clean. I was uncomfortable about doing without any fall protection even though I had. This added a level of confidence the last time we cleaned the panels a few weeks ago. The product is heavy duty and seems well made for my purpose of using it on several times a year will last a lifetime. We mounted a permanent U-bolt roof anchor that attached around your rafter. It's the 3M DBI-Sala 2103670 U-bolt anchor. After a bunch of research we thought this one was the best and most rugged. You can find them on-line....not cheap, about 75 bucks but well worth it and it only cause you to drill 2 holes and then just bolt it inside your rafter from the attic if that's possible. I highly recommend the Up Gear package. I think spending an extra 29 buck for the better rope connector is a good idea.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable, Complete, Portable kit This harness is well made and is adjustable for many body types (up to 310 lbs). I'm 6 ft, 196lbs and I was able to easily put on the harness and adjust it for a nice tight fit. I tested a fall scenario (from a rafter in my home) and the harness absorbed the weight and loosened up around the shoulders/chest but the thigh loops stayed tight. There was no chance of me falling out of the harness when it loosened. There's a tab on the harness that has a "Fall Indicator" which is still intact. I'm not clear on whether or not it is recommended to continue use after the "Fall Indicator" is pulled out but I suppose the harness will still work fine. The roof anchor heavy steel and comes with 12 screws. The hardware, lanyard and lifeline rope all seem very strong and durable The kit comes in a nice small storage bucket which makes it nice and portable and there's no problem getting everything to fit back into the bucket!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safety First! Can you put a price on your health and well being? When you're healthy, you don't consider health and issue; that is until something happens and you'll pay a fortune to get your health back. Enough preaching about your health. I'll begin the review of this system. The kit comes in a nice heavy duty pail with handle and lid. There's enough room in the pail to put other things you may need for the job (gloves, windbreaker, water bottle, etc). The harness is well made and strong - I can't see it breaking on anyone. The rope attaches to the roof and there's plenty of room to move. The mechanism where the harness attaches to the rope is innovative - the rope slides along the mechanism without binding. You do need to attach the rope to the roof via nails or screws. The system works great and gives you a lot of range of movement. The system is designed, so if someone falls, the system gives and absorbs some of the shock from falling. I highly recommend this to anyone whose going to spend time on a roof. Remember that it's a small investment for your safety!
