Your keylock is not a dud, in fact, it is operating correctly. In order to lock a Weslock keylock, prior to closing the door, you depress the push button on the interior rosette which will automatically lock the lock. Once you pull the pull the door shut, the lock remains locked. If you have a deadbolt on the door, you will need the key to lock the deadbolt. In order to unlock the keylock, you will use a key from the exterior or if you are on the interior, you will just turn the lever and it will automatically unlock the lock.

The lock is locked from the inside by depressing the push button in the rosette. As opposed to a turn button in the face of the lever, you just push the push button and it locks the door. When you want to unlock, turn the lever from the inside or use the key from the outside.
