You need to measure the distance between your joists to determine which one you need as they each expand enough to fit either 16"OC or 24" OC. I had 24" OC and purchased the 21.5" model. I'd guess you'd need the 15.5" one if you had 16" OC.

Heavy is a relative term. I would make sure it is rock solid between the studs before trying it.

Saf-T-Brace
The safe-t-brace that I installed was so simple. I had to cut a 4 inch opening and then slid the brace into the hole, ensuring it was cock-eyed or anything, and then tightened it down with a wrench. I also installed this between 24-inch ceiling joists and it still felt very strong.

WELL BUILT-POORLY DESIGNED
This box is sturdy but does not perform well. The metal teeth “walk “as you tighten the strut so that it is nearly impossible to get level and square at the same time. I solved this problem by placing two screws through each of the plastic tabs at the strut ends so that it could not move as it was tightened. Even after the strut is in place, it can still turn, meaning the fan can go off axis. I solved this by pop riveting an extra bracket to the side of the box and then screwing it to the joist. (Negates center mounting box between joists. The 10-24 bolts that mount the fan would not go into the box. At first I thought it might have nylon inserts to prevent loosening but when I examined the threads, they were damaged. I sovled this by taping the box to 10-24 and then adding lock nuts to each bolt where it protruded from the top of the box. Two hours later . . . . Don’t waste your money or time. You would be better off mounting the box to a stud piece nailed between the joists. JSmith

Excellant Value. Does the job needed. Would use again.
Was looking at installing a ceiling fan in my apartment. Found out the outlet box was only for lighting and not fan rated. Went to the local Home Depot and wanted the lower cost one. Wasn't in stock. But they matched the price on this one. Worked well. Only comment is the box was higher than the drywall. Not sure if I tightened the brace correctly (with legs resting on drywall) or if my ceiling was a little thicker. Put a spacer (fender washers) to compensate. Every thing worked well and was fairly quick to install. (most time was spent clearing out the insulation to get a clear view/path to the studs.) I would use again or recommend a friend to use.
