There is an ASTM specification for the type of PVC to use. It is available most places that sell white pvc. Just read installation instructions - note that the exhaust needs to be angled to the unit - it is a condensing exhaust -

That's what I use it for. I've got about 30 gal of water in 3 zones - I also have a solar tank in between - works well.

My 24 year old water heater was failing, mainly because it had never been drained and the capacity had diminished to the point where the 90 gallon tub could not be adequately filled with hot water. I wanted a well-built water heater that hopefully will last another 20 some years. I also wanted a high efficiency heater, but wanted a tank for those times when storms come through in the middle of the night and knock out our power. I looked at several hybrid designs and settled on this one because it is stainless steel (no anode), made in the USA by a company with an excellent reputation for many years, and the connections were close to matching those of my old water heater. While I do much of my own work and could have installed this, I had a professional contractor come out, mainly because my water heater is upstairs and I knew I could not get the old one down by myself since it had so much sediment in it. The install went well and just over 30 minutes after plugging in the heater, the 60 gallons had been raised from 61 F to 120 F. Impressive. This morning was a real test. My son and wife were taking showers at the same time -- in separate showers, of course. They are both water hogs. Then I took a shower and my daughter took her shower. I walked in to look at the water heater as soon as I had enough clothes on to parade through the house (about two minutes) and the temperature was still at 122 F and the fire was not burning. This unit recovers so fast, just amazing. It is also so very quiet! There is only one minor downside. This water heater no longer adds heat to my utility room, or as they say in England, my airing cupboard. I used to be able to dry wool socks and hang up slightly damp Levi's for final drying and straightening. Not sure this is going to work so well anymore until the winter when the furnace comes on again. In the end, I am very pleased with this water heater and highly recommend it. Sure, it is pricey, but if it lasts for years, it will be well worth it. I suspect the only thing that might fail would be the controls. I use a surge protector at the receptacle to be safer.

Efficient Water Heater
Replaced two old inefficient water heaters that were piped in parallel. Unit appears to be high quality. Too early to determine gas savings, but unit significantly more efficient than units replaced. Very quiet and has an ECO mode for when only a few are in the house. Had 6 adults in house for a week and never ran out of hot water operating in Normal mode. Need to be able to sweat copper and run PVC pipe if you are going to install this yourself. Piping more complex in my installation than most as I have a circulating system for instant hot water. Vented through side wall and drilled holes through wall for a clean installation of the air intake and exhaust.

This water heater gave me the specifics I was looking for— short height with monstrous water heating capability. It didn’t require a power vent , I was able to vent out my chimney. It does require a pump to remove condensation from the super efficiency. Recovery rate is off the charts. We have 4 adults and a child who take at least 8 baths a day and it handles the household easily. Stainless steel as well, it was pricey but it was worth the price .
