Q:Can this water heater be vented out a sidewall?

          Answer This Question

A:  Per our local PA plumbers it is REQUIRED to be vented out a side wall. Regulations in your area may differ. You cannot vent through the house flu anymore. It has to be at least 14 inches off the ground and 4ft from any window. This makes doing a hot water heater swap far more complicated that it use to be.

A:  Mine is vented out a side wall, so yes it can be vented that way. My vent is at about the same height as the top of the heater; I don't know if venting to a lower point would work. The unit has a fan, so maybe lower vent would work, but I don't know. You should be aware that these high efficiency heaters have very different installation requirements than a regular heater: They have a condensate drain that has some sort of chemicals in it, which normal heaters do not have; plus the regular metal flue will not work -- have to have PVC. This makes installation much more expensive, i think I paid $3,000. My heater had a defective valve, which was replaced by the manufacturer, but which meant the installer had to come back a number of times. You should also be aware that installers are not very familiar with these high efficiency heaters and you may have difficulty finding one who can do it. Once installed and repaired, however, the heater has been working perfectly for about 8 months. If you are in California, this heater will qualify for a rebate under the state's energy program, but only if you install other high efficiency things at the same time, primarily a high efficiency furnace.

Read the instructions like I didn't at first!
I kept getting lock out error codes and had many trips from emergency service only to discover that had I read the instruction it would have been all avoided. My intake and exhaust calculations were off and 90 degree elbows added to my footages. I cut the intake and exhaust vents shorter and haven't had any problems since. It's all in reading the instructions.

Since we can’t use an instant hot water tank due to our well water and the amount of dissolved minerals we chose this tank. Works great for my family of 6. My only complaint revolves around the new federal regulations that require the new tanks heat exchanger and exhaust. This tank has to have plumbing run to/through external walls for fresh air and exhaust for the hot water tank to function. You cannot use the house flu any more. Had to relocate the hot water tank and pressure tank which made the process far more complicated and took far more time.

We’ve had this about 1 year in a northern climate. It replaced a pair of 20-year old 40-gallon water heaters and there’s been a noticeable improvement. The older ones had a slightly higher BTU, but a much lower efficiency. We’re impressed with how quickly the new one heats water and that we’ve never run out of hot water.

After fighting error codes randomly for months, returned it. Would "error lock out" 3-4 times per week. Tried everything to solve the problem, multiple plumbers looked at it, monitored natural gas pressure to make sure it was within range for extended periods. In the long run, lost tons of money on service calls and having to rip out the unit and replace with "simpler" Rheem direct vent.

I've had this water heater for 6 months now. There had been no issues with installation or operating this unit. It is amazing how much hot water this device produces, we had 15 people stay at our hose for thanksgiving, we have 3 bathrooms, 2 dishwashers and two washing machines. There were times where all of them were used at the same time and we still had hot water to run a bath. It is very functional and it looks terrific with the stainless steel finish on the outside. One thing I regret is that it doesn't have any Wi-Fi functionally that would be useful to shut down the unit when we are away.

After much research I purchased this water heater because of its highly efficient design, stainless steel/long life design and its capacity to product a lot of hot water. Because I was replacing a conventional gas water heater, I had to run new exhaust ducting appropriate for a condensing water heater design. This new ducting added a significant cost to the installation but I factored this into my budget. It took 10 days for the water heater to arrive (special order) to my local Home Depot. I could have had it shipped directly to my house but it was projected to take nearly a week longer to get the heater delivered to me directly in lieu of delivering it to the Home Depot store. I had expected to be able to pick up the tank with my large SUV but because of the VERY oversized wooden crate and pallet the tank was encased in, I had to rent a truck from Home Depot. This situation was unexpected and caused a significant delay in getting the water heater to my house so the plumber could install it. The plumber had no problem installing it and it came to life quickly once all of the connections were made. There was some initial noise associated with getting the air bled from the system etc. However, later that night when we started showering we heard a loud vibration sound a few minutes into the shower. The sound lasted about 20 seconds and then went away. I looked at the user manual and there was little trouble shooting guidance for noise. The only tangible topic was related to a lack of natural gas flow to the unit. We have a dedicated gas line to the unit and the pipe and connection sizes are all per this unit's installation guidelines. The noise happens every time we shower and seems to be associated with the burner coming on. It dissipates after about 20 seconds. However, the noise is such that it wakes everyone up in the house when it happens. I will follow up with this review once I am able to get Westinghouse to comment. Other than this vibration noise the unit is nearly silent and what little noise it produces should not be objectionable to anyone.
