My old torchere lamp switch appears to have the wires soldered to the old switch. Will this replacement have to be soldered as well? I am a novice at this so not too sure how to really replace the switch.

Easy to install. Instructions are clear. If you are not familiar with electrical wiring, keep in mind - you will need to purchase some wire-nuts (available at Home Depot). Should be small ones - ask at the hardware desk which ones to buy. You will simply cut the existing wires near the switch, twist the old wires together, and screw on the wire nut. Make sure you DO NOT leave any exposed wiring coming out of the wire nut - cut the insulation so that you expose enough wire for the nut (match the length of exposed wire to the length of exposed wire on the new switch), but not so much that it sticks out of the nut after you twist it on. Reassemble the lamp and you should be good to go. I hate to state the obvious, but since you said you are a novice - don’t forget to unplug the lamp before starting! Even experienced electricians can make that mistake - and it doesn’t work out too good.

how does it install? Are there instructions?

I assume the old wires attaching the switch need to be cut out. Does the ball have to be installed in a particular way?
Asked by: WC67
No instructions, I was able to cut, strip the old wires and attach the switch with wire lugs with no soldering.

Bulb is not lighting. Bought new dimmer, still not work. Incoming voltage to switch is 120 Volts, Voltage reading after switch is 93 to 94 volts. Is the 93 volts what it is supposed to be?

Yes the instructions seemed pretty clear (although I am an engineer). As long as it appears to look like your old one, you should be okay.

I used this product about 9 years ago to replace a worn-out switch - and just used it again. This most recent time it came DOA and I had to have it reshipped. The 2nd time it worked. The only issue is that this switch doesn’t turn on the lamp until the rheostat is turned about 1/2 way. Not a real problem, but the switch as sent doesn’t allow quite as gradual a dim-to-bright experience. Overall it works.

Installed easily and works as anticipated. Perhaps details were in product description and was not understood or noticed; this replacement part is NOT a dimmer switch, which is what we wanted to replace. This part is just an ON/OFF switch. Part was available on other sites at lesser prices, but added shipping raised the total price. We choose to purchase from H.D. because of the shipping and local pick-up. Be carful to look for "dimmer" in description if that is the type of switch you want.
