The answer provided by Westinghouse is technically incorrect and did not answer all of my questions. It has been almost two weeks since I started asking questions about this generator via phone calls, email, and product questions like here and no one at Westinghouse seems to really know much technical information about it. When I call, I am put on hold and often the call eventually is disconnected. There is a good reason why others have rated the Customer Service very low. Even calling the Corporate Office isn't helpful.

This SmartIdle is the worst thing ever. This is an $1100 paperweight for me. Westinghouse is extremely illiterate when it comes to needs like yours, and mine. I bought it to ensure my sump pump operates during several days of heavy rain. Because of SmartIdle, the sump pump is unable to start. Them saying it's able to ramp up quickly enough is just wrong. It doesn't and is harmful to motors like this.

Where is this generator built and what brand engine does it have?

Asked by Fran July 7, 2020

Answer

This generator is created and designed with a Westinghouse engine at our headquarters in Columbus, OH with a team of industry experts and then assembled in our factories in China and Vietnam where we have stringent quality control standards.

GREAT WHOLE HOUSE GENERATOR I’ve only gone as far as setting up the unit and testing it briefly, ...
GREAT WHOLE HOUSE GENERATOR I’ve only gone as far as setting up the unit and testing it briefly, I have high hopes that this will last a good long time and perform well. I recommend this unit for the reasons I will outline below. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS AND SETUP: Everything was well packaged, and quickly shipped. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. But I will summarize them here. Attach the wheels, Attach the Legs, Connect and Charge the Battery, Add Oil, Add Fuel, Start it up. That is it. It fired up right away using the included remote control. TIP: As others have noted. The manuals (and mfg pictures) are a little outdated. It does include both a 30AMP and 50AMP outlet. BEST FEATURES: < 5% Total Harmonic Distortion (This is the main reason I bought it to keep my electronics safe) 30AMP 120/240V Outlet 50AMP 120/240V Outlet Full Panel GFI Breaker Outlet covers Remote AND Manual Start Quiet (about 30% quieter than my old generator which my neighbors will approve of) SUMMARY: I went with the 8500 Pro over other models, primarily for the <5% THD. This was critical for my sensitive electronics. I added on an aftermarket tri-fuel adapter. I intend to run this on Propane or Natural gas primarily. I don’t like keeping 20-30 gallons of gasoline in my garage all year. Propane will store much better. None of the other dual fuel factory units had <5% THD. Also, most of the dual fuel units did not have manual start capability. So, on other units (besides the PRO) if the power is out and your battery is dead, then you are out of luck. Finally, since the primary designed use of this is for construction, I knew it would hold up to lots of abuse and neglect for my limited home use scenario. I’ve never had a Westinghouse Generator before, but I did a lot of research and it seems the best option in this price range. The next bump up in performance pretty much doubles the cost. I did not get another “cheap” unit, due to THD and massive amounts of complaints of support on the sub $1,000 generators. My old “store brand” unit was a rare find with a great engine. At the time it was all that was available in the middle of an extended outage. This Westinghouse is built like a tank, I expect it will last a long time.

Everything you could want and more.
Powerful. Will handle powering the whole house during power outages and big enough to run my welder. 50 amp outlet is a tremendous bonus.

Looks sturdy and ready for some foul weather!
Bought in Aug 2020 and came within a week. Assembled per directions. Hint: follow the User Manual over the quick assembly instructions (they’re slightly different and will leave you searching for nuts that didn’t come with it). Easy to hook up the battery cables (but would have been easier if I did it before I put that wheel on). Gas went in, followed instructions and used the push button start and after 2nd try, it started right up. It does idle down and sounds like it’s dying, but that’s just when no electronics are pulling on it and goes into low and slow mode. Ran it for 20 minutes and tested it out. All is good. Battery was vibrating a bit. Will be looking into that area once it cools down. Almost looking forward to the next blackout.

Unboxed, put together and put right to use. Have an extra quart of oil! It comes with 1qt, but takes 1.6. Wheels are a little cheap but get the job done, probably won’t hold up too well on a job site but fine for rolling in and out of the garage. Comes with a 120/240V 30 A and 50 A plug. The 50 A replaces the 120V AC 30A, this is not shown in the manual or product description (see attached picture of panel). Seems to do pretty well on fuel, idle down feature and remote start are good features. Comes with a charger to keep battery maintained when not in use. So far so good, ran my whole house after loosing power post storm Isaias.

More Than I Expected!
Purchased this recently to power 10 house circuits through a manual transfer switch. Set up was easy and I am impressed with the quality, features and accessories. I have owned 4 portable almost whole house generators and the WPro8500 is by far my favorite. Every circuit powered will not be running at the same time so I estimate the average consumption will be around 4800 watts. The 5% THD and reviews from other purchasers were key factors in my decision.

I purchased the WPro8500 after doing considerable research on various makes and models. I settled on this generator due to the fuel efficiency and THD rating! I received my generator well ahead of Home Depot's promised delivery date (welcome surprise) and the generator I received was equipped with the 50 AMP plug which was also a welcome surprise! The generator was very easy to put together and the quality of the generator seems nice! The lessons I learned with my generator include finding a battery cable disconnect plug that was hidden behind the control panel and left unplugged during shipping (this initially prevented my generator from starting). According to Westinghouse technical support this is a common problem; however, this hidden plug is not mentioned in the start-up directions nor owners manual! I also discovered with help from Westinghouse that if you're using the recoil starter (manual pull start) you'll need to manually over ride your automatic choke! The choke lever on top of the carburetor is really discrete and almost completely unnoticeable without a diagram (this information is also absent from the owners manual). Without the manual choke override you'll have a heck of a time trying to get this generator to fire! Pros: Quiet Nicely constructed Consistent voltage (119.3 volts with 0.1-0.2 volt variation while adding/removing loads) Fast shipping and good customer service from Home Depot Cons: The oil provided in the box from Westinghouse will not fill your crankcase to the normal operating range (buy two quarts of quality oil for your start-up) The customer service from Westinghouse is extremely slow (allow 1-3 days for any feedback to your questions) The owners manual is missing important information about the manual start-up procedures (identifying where your choke override is located & also mentioning the battery cable disconnect plug located behind the control panel) Overall, I'm please with the generator and only wish that Westinghouse had more efficient/responsive technical support for consumers & a more complete/comprehensive owners manual.

Solid and Reliable Generator
After doing lots or research I choose the WPro8500. It's advertised 5% (THD) Total Harmonic Distortion and modern day (AVR) automatic voltage regulation makes it a win-win as portable mostly-whole house backup power solution. The THD was also verified with an oscilloscope, it does indeed fit the below 5% mark at 60Hz. So far it is able to power most newer energy-efficient equipment in my home with 2-3kW to spare. This includes a well pump, gas furnace, gas water heater, gas stove, two fridges, two deep freezers, several computer systems, LED TV, internet modem and all home lights (LED). It is very quiet compared to the generators I owned in the past and when located behind my house, I can barely hear the running sound of an engine. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that it shipped with a 14-50R 50A receptacle. Following the Westinghouse service bulletin on floating the neutral was quick and painless. If you are looking for a SOLID generator, this is it!

Nice generator, but not quite what I expected
This WPro8500 is well built except the wheels could be more stout. It arrived very quickly, assembled very easily and started right up. At this point I noticed that this unit did not have an L5-30R receptacle as is shown in the photos and in the manual. This one has an L14-30R and 14-50R. Not sure why this is. Guess I won't be using it for RV plug in. All in all it still seems like a great unit. I do like that the manual indicates that the battery does get charged as the generator runs in addition to the plug in trickle charger that is supplied with the unit. That way the battery will not go dead as the unit runs.
