Questions & Answers

Are the washer and dryer delivered separately so that they can be carried up narrow stairs?

Asked by: JS
No. The unit is a one-piece unit. It was not designed to be disassembled. When they delivered my unit, it was carried up two flights of stairs. The deliverymen each wore a special shoulder harness that allowed them to carry the unit up narrow stairs. Using a hand truck would not have worked due to the tight turning radius of the stairs and the height of the unit. Well worth paying a couple of professionals to deliver it. The techs spent about an hour trying to get the vent to line up, without success. (These techs were not associated with Home Depot.) Be sure to read my review of this item before you buy one.

Is the dryer exhaust vent on the back or the side of the machine?

Dryer exhaust is in the back.

Is this set energy efficient?

Asked by: Holly
No this dryer is not energy efficient. It was never rated as an "Energy Star." In fact, with the design of this machine to comply with the new "energy savings" legal standards that all NEW washers have to meet, it is actually far more energy inefficient. The reason I say this is that while it uses less water than previous models, the only thing the designers changed was the programming of the machine. It is not improved. It just uses smaller amounts of water for the wash and rinse cycles. The law mandates that. The law does not say anything about the machine having to get your clothes clean. Since the machine only fills up 1/2 as much on the wash cycle (and tepid water at best-even on the hot cycle) and 1/4 or less on the rinse cycle, you will end up doing small loads to partially compensate for this. The end result is that you will do twice as many loads, your clothes will still not get as clean as they would with the OLD model of the same machine (and this machine was designed 30 or more years ago), and you will waste twice as much time dealing with this, and twice as much electricity to wash your clothes. Plus your clothes will feel like they were washed on a rock. Why? Because the rinse cycle of the machine fills the tub only up to the tops of the bottom vanes. Forget about your clothes ever touching the agitator (corkscrew) vanes. This ensures that lots of detergent is left in your clothes. But hey, it meets the legal requirements, and they still sell washing machines. You just lose in that you waste time, energy, money and still don't get your clothes clean. Do yourself a favor. Buy a USED thin twin made before circa 2002. They worked great. They still weren't Energy Stars, but they did get your clothes clean. Buy this machine and you will hate it.

where are the dryer lint screen for the model lte 5243dq

Asked by: mike
This was confusing for me, too, because it isn't in the manual. It is on the back wall on the right side. You will see two larger holes that are meant for fingers.

White Thin Twin Laundry Center with 1.5 cu. ft. Washer and 3.4 cu. ft. Electric Vented Dryer is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 240.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits in small spaces This is my second Thin Twin. This one replaces one that I had for 30 years -- so it's definitely a solid machine. I have limited space for a washer/dryer and this fits perfectly. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an apartment sized washer/dryer.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from First one delivered did not work at all...second one works I am torn on how to write this review. My challenge is that the first delivered product did not work. After all the work and full installation, the washer worked but the dryer was completely dead. At the second delivery, the delivery people had to check all the wires because the first dryer flipped the electrical (I just know the first one caused a big problem - not exactly sure what). The second washer/dryer works fine, however, I was extremely disappointed that the first one did not work. When you schedule delivery, you receive a four hour window, then have to clear your schedule to meet with the driver. It is a huge inconvenience to have to do this twice. So, while the second unit works fine and actually seems to be a good product, only 1 of the 2 I purchased actually worked (50%), which is why I rated this product 3 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 23 Years worth of service from my original machine. Excellent Machine I have to replace my existing older model. Considering I got 23 years of service out of my older model (13 years 1 person - 10yrs 2 people), there is no choice for me. Only once did I have a service tech come in & it was not a major repair. So, here's hoping that the new one gives me the same type service that the original 1 did.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Want to throw this out the window. When my son was born, hubs and I decided to get an apartment with a washer/dryer or hookups instead of constantly losing baby socks in the communal laundry at our old apartment. We figured this would make our life so much easier and were excited to use our new unit. For starters, we can fit in one load: 3 baby towels, 2 full size adult towels, 3 adult wash cloths and 2 baby wash cloths. So we have to do a lot of loads of laundry. Which wouldn't be so bad except: it takes three drying cycles to make our clothes dry. And that is even for loads consisting of 3 onesies and a baby sheet. Tiny loads take forever to dry. We clean the lint trap as well as we can but we can't get to the LOTS of lint behind the weird fence behind the lint trap. The agitator in the washer has also fallen completely apart, leaving us with sharp, frayed edges ripping at our clothes. I hate this machine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Buy Bought this unit to replace the Thin Twin unit that came with our condo 14 years ago. Old unit worked great the whole time we owned it, never needed a repair. The only reason we decided to purchase the new unit was that the old unit was starting to get a little noisy and our local appliance dealer was offering an tremendous deal on his existing stock. New unit is quieter that the old unit and knobs have been updated but works exactly like the original.Great machine for a small space & we like the fact that it has a smaller capacity than the larger units because we might run the machine one extra time a week due to the smaller capacity but laundry days are so much easier when you have smaller loads to deal with to begin with.We are expecting another 14 years of trouble free laundry days with this newer model.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I like this product, but was disappointed that the top metal part/cover does not sit flush. I like this product, but was disappointed that the top metal part/cover does not sit flush. I would hope that someone from Home Depot would come back to correct this problem/flaw.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This machine should not be allowed to be sold. Period. Buy it and you will hate it forever. I've had a thin twin for the past 14 years. I was happy with the old machine. It did what it was supposed to do. It cleaned my clothes. When the old machine gave up the ghost, my landlord replaced it with a "new" thin twin. Looks almost identical to the old machine. That's where the similarity ends. How can I count the ways I hate the new model? First, the new model complies with the new federal law. It uses less water overall, and it uses less hot water. Those are mandated by law. Unfortunately, the law doesn't require that the washing machine get your clothes clean. The first thing you will notice is that although the water temperature settings on the panel say "Cold, Cool, Warm and Hot." They should say "cold and tepid." There is no such thing as "Hot." The machine is programmed on the "Hot" setting so that for the first 45 seconds or so, it dumps cold water into the tub. Then it mixes in some hot water. The result is an overall tepid wash. Nothing more. Then there's the worst part. The water levels. The new "water saving" feature only fills the tub up about 1/2 of previous levels. That's on the wash cycle. The rinse cycle is even worse. The rinse cycle fills the tub with about 4" of water. Not enough to cover the vanes at the bottom of the tub! Try to rinse the soap out of two bath towels in four inches of water. It doesn't work. The net result of all this is you have three choices. (1) Put the normal amount of clothes in the machine, and accept the fact that your clothes will not be very clean and will have soap residue in them. (2) Wash tiny loads and accept the fact that you're going to spend twice as much time loading and unloading the machine, (and Oh Gee, there goes your "energy savings" - you just doubled or tripled the amount of energy that you're going to burn up doing multiple mini-loads). (3) Stand there and manually add water to each cycle using a hose connected to the sink. (I can't tell you how many hours I've spent standing there nursing this machine.) The bottom line is that the tassel-toed suits in the nosebleed suites at Whirlpool made a conscious decision to (1) Not improve the basic technology that went into designing this machine 25 years ago and (2) Comply with the new law, knowing that the customer wouldn't know the difference until he/she got the machine home and had it installed. I'm stuck. There are no front loading washer/dryer combinations that will fit into the space where this machine goes in my apartment. If you have to put a thin twin in, I'd recommend buying a used machine that wasn't made to comply with the new federal standards. Otherwise, a front-loader is probably going to be your best bet. But whatever you do, stay away from this piece of junk. Buy one and you will curse the people at Whirlpool every time you do a load of laundry... for the life of the machine! Not to mention the joy of wearing clothes that feel like you washed them on a rock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful compact washer/dryer!! Love my 24 inch Thin Twin! Sturdy, simple, washes and dries very well. Compact which is what I wanted and needed for condo closet but holds more than you think and washes and dries it all very well. More than enough cycle options, and dryer miser works - it shuts off when dry so you don't have to guess nor over-dry the clothes. I hope to have this w/d for years to come and would buy it again without hesitation. Please don't stop making this basic w/d! I do not want fancy electronics or water level sensors that can break. This one fills with water and really cleans. It is normal agitator type noisy, not bad though. Dryer very quiet and buzzer at end is NOT bad like some say - it is a "buzz" and is just one time, quick. Perfect w/d!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Read all reviews After reading the reviews which mostly were positive I decided to buy the unit. It is very loud so unless you have a place away from your living area take that into consideration, I chose whirlpool thinking it was a known name for quality. This isn't a quality product. The dryer door is hard to open and close and I feel the handle will come loose very soon. Dryer takes a long time to dry and the washer setting of delicate is anything but. Disappointed but I can deal as I'm the only one using this unit. Wouldn't recommend for a family.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mediocre at best I have had this product since 5/1/13. It fits very well into a cabinet that we constructed for it. The dryer needs to be run twice for an amount of 7-8 pieces of clothing. A technician has to come out already to also fix the rinse cycle part of the system as it hangs up on that cycle and must be manually adjusted or it will just keep running water. Based upon the reviews I read on line I thought that this product would be better built using quality parts...wrong. Would not recommend to anyone who needs to do large amounts of laundry. It's adequate for a single person doing a little at a time...assuming all the cycles are in working order and the heating element does it's job.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy the extra's they try to sell you.. You don't need new dryer vent or dryer cord.. This is for a rental unit that I was not at.. Ordered on website and spoke with employee over the phone.. I was told i had to buy the dryer vent "even though I had a unit in there already".. also they sold me electric cord for the dryer.. Which I already had.. So their ppl are not very knowledgeable.. As I told them I have a unit there and was just replacing it..

Rated 2 out of 5 by from WHIRLPOOL THIN TWIN STACKING WASHER/DRYER This is the 4th thin twin stacking washer/dryer I have had in the last 23 years in my current condo. (The first and original washer/dryer was a GE, then I have had 3 Whirlpool Thin Twins.) This 4th one is especially noisy--the washer, that is--when the water is draining, then when it changes to the spin cycle, it makes a huge noise, then the spin cycle is especially noisy also. It is difficult to hear the television when the washer is going as my washer/dryer is located in the kitchen, only a few feet away from the living room where we watch television. I will probably contact the store from which I purchased it to inform them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from fits in space I had a Maytag stack washer and dryer for over 20 years and loved it. The new whirlpool fits in the place, but it is smaller, the size of washer tub and dryer. It does not hold as large a load. I liked the way the Maytag door open to the washer and the dryer(the dryer door is very hard to open and close). The new machine is not a tall as the old one, so you have to bend over further to put the clothes in and to get them out. It needs to be a couple of inches higher. It washes and dries great. I just know you can make another stack machine like my old one and when you do please let me know. I will be in line to buy one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly large capacity for such a compact pair! We bought our new combo washer/dryer because our old (very old - parts no longer available) mixed set of jury-rigged compact washer with dryer stuck on a shelf decided to quit working. This was in our little "tin palace" in Florida where we spend the winter months. This was the only unit we could find that would fit without major carpentry. I was amazed at how much more would fit in the washer and how FAST the dryer spit out fresh, dry clothing. It is quiet, takes even less space than the compacts it replaced and does a great job. I'm so glad we bought it. I would recommend it to any one needing a space saving pair.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I loved it at first, but after 6 months of use ... ... I have a big issue. This is my second combo washer/dryer. I would not have purchased this Whirlpool model had I known I cannot clean the washer lint trap. There is no way to do this - I consulted the company that installs all my appliances. My tech told me there should be no lint as this model automatically removes lint. That is NOT TRUE. I have a dark coloured wardrobe and white towels - there is lint on EVERYTHING and blobs of lint dried on every item I hang to dry (lingerie, shirts, jeans) as I do not use the dryer for all my washing.I am stuck with the appliance now, but I won't be buying another.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very small capacity The actual load capacity is quite small, only good for socks, underclothes, tee-shirts, etc. It would have been much better if they'd designed the washer to be agitator-less; the agitator takes up most of the space in the washer. Both the washer and dryer are quite noisy. We bought the units to go in our master bath (3rd floor) since our laundry room is on the first floor. It is much too noisy to operate after we go to bed. Overall the quality is okay, and it does a good job of cleaning clothes, but I wish we had spent $200 more and gotten a regular washer/dryer combo that could be stacked.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Teacup washing tub I've had this washer/dryer combo about a year now. It does the job for one person, but the wash tub is tiny!! I literally can't put more than 4 regular towels in at a time. Washing/drying is fairly quick but I have to do more loads every week so I don't know if it's saving any electric costs. I only kept this because nothing else fits in my laundry closet.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lint Catcher is next to useless This is the washer dryer that came with my apartment, and the lint trap does not create a seal, allowing lint to pass through many places. Behind it is a grate, that I didn't know existed until I decided to see what was behind the lint trap. There I found about 1/2 cubic foot of lint, gum, a pen and pencil, and the key to my clothes drying in one cycle rather than having to use two. I am still in the process of cleaning this grate, and have been for over an hour. This could have been prevented had you made a lint trap that didn't just loosely sit there, and one that was useful.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too small! I have always purchased Whirlpool appliances and have been happy with them, but this washer/dryer stackable is too small to do an average size load of laundry. It doesn't do a good job washing, and takes at least two cycles to get clothes dried. Living in south Florida, I cannot take a chance that my laundry will get mildewed if not completely dried. The washer basket is already "shredding" - the plastic rim is peeling off, and the dryer has a brown "burn" stain on the aluminum plate in the dryer. I will have to purchase a new washer/dryer as soon as I can afford to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Basic, reliable, gets the job done. We bought this washer/dryer combo unit because it is exactly like the old one it replaces, and because it was the only unit that would fit in the tiny space that we have. The old one was at least 10 years old, and it was great. This new one looks the same, has the same features, and feels just as sturdy/reliable. It's lack of complex electronic features is actually a plus in my book, since it means less components that could possibly fail. The only complaint I have, and it is a minor complaint, is that the washer is somewhat loud while it is filling with water.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Thrilled Unfortunately the appliance that was in our residence when we bought this unit seven years ago was no longer working. We had t replace it with a unit that would fit the space, and no one makes a unit that was as large as the previous one, the dyer on top are all to deep, so in order to fit the space we took this smaller one, we took Whirlpool because it had an enamel tub, however it twists all the garments up, and also takes much longer to dry than my old one, would not recommend, have your engineers try to come up with a lager model that is not so deep!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This washer dryer is perfect for apartment living This is actually my second until, it replaced a 10-year-old until that took a beating and kept on ticking far longer than I expected. I checked out the alternatives in a local appliance store chain and could find one reason not o stick with the Whirlpool. It fits into a really narrow closet, it does a great job, especially on towels and sheets, and the vibration is tolerable on lower floors. You do have to get the balancing right and make sure the legs are properly attached. I'm a happy camper and will be for the next decade.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Well Twins were already installed when I moved in. Anything bigger wouldn't fit. Had my doubts at first, but they are fine for a person living alone. A few comments on other reviews: if you have to run the dryer for more than one cycle for a normal load, there is a problem. Could be no heat or blocked vent or filter. If you are finding pencils, gum and whatever else behind the filter, don't blame the filter design. You should not be putting gum, pencils & whatever else in the wash. Also check your drinking water for lead.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Its Great. I like this washer dryer combination because it is small and I was able to put it in my closet in the bathroom. It washes the perfect amount of clothes for me, and I was surprised how many garments I was able to put into the washer. I had never set the dryer on automatic with my previous dryer because the clothes never were completely dry. With this dryer every time I use the automatic setting my clothes are dry, and it doesn't seem to take that long. Not having to run up and down the stairs is what I love most about it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing The only good thing about this unit is that it fills water from all sides, which means it fills quickly, and that it has an agitator.I get annoyed every time I wash which is 3 x a day because this tub and dryer are so tiny. I feel like I'm wasting so much electric and it is so loud.I can barely open the dryer door because the handle depth is so small and shallow. If I could afford to give this away I would. It will be replaced as soon as I have the $$$. It doesn't spin very dry and the dryer doesn't dry well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Perfect for One Person I prefer it for my little condo, because it washes very small loads and I can have a load washed and dried in a little over an hour. Two things I don't like about it: 1. the lint trap for the dryer is located in the very back of the machine, and it takes three steps to clean. I miss having the quick clean lint trap. 2. The indicator buzzer for the dryer is LOUD and I haven't figured out a way to turn it off. This means that I can't start a load in the evening because I will be awakened by the buzzer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This was the only washer/dryer that fit in the space we had The machines are quiet, easy to use, and just the right size, not only fit, but also for size of loads. I have found only one slight problem. Because I am tall, I have some difficulty seeing the front of the washer tub, but that is only a minor problem. I've only had them a couple weeks, but have used them a lot and have found nothing I dislike about them. Clothes are very clean and perfectly dry with the automatic (energy saving) setting.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too Noisy We had a previous version of this washer dryer and it was great and lasted for 16 years. The heating elements in the dryer stopped working and rather than replace it we bought an entirely new unit. Mistake! The new unit is so noisy on the wash cycle that I think something is wrong with it - from the first usage. I should probably exchange it - but there is no guarantee a new one would be less noisy. It is used in a second home - condo.
