We keep our wine refrigerator in the house in a hall, but it is not built in. Does this refrigerator have to be built in?
It can be either built-in or freestanding for installation.
We kept our’s out in the open It looked fine but it over-cooled on multiple occasions. We had problems after only 2 weeks. It actually froze some of the bottles at one point. You’ll have to pay to return the unit, repair it yourself, or pay someone to repair it for you (the warranty isn’t really a warranty on anything) I wouldn’t recommend this fridge for any setting, built in or out in the open.
No, it does not have to be built in. But I would not recommend this fridge as it stopped working within 2 months of owning it.

Can this Refrigerator be used in a garage?
Yes that is where i have mine but keep in mind there maybe higher temp fluctuations during the day causing it to work harder. If you live in a climate that gets into the 100s during the day in the summer i would suggest keeping it indoors.

I wouldn’t recommend using it in a garage. Our unit has trouble maintaining temperature in a normal home. Our started over cooling after 2 weeks and at one point froze some of our bottles. The warranty won’t cover the cost of any return or repair so I’d avoid this product at all costs.

Are the shelves removable? Are the shelves adjustable? (up and down) Do large, wide bottles fit? 750ML bottles that have more glass than regular bottles, and are thicker, wider. When you pull out the shelf, does it stay in place, or fall forward? Sturdy shelves?
Yes, the shelves are removable.
The shelves are locked in to place. The unit will likely malfunction and over cool pretty quickly after you purchase it so you’ll want to avoid using any of the shelves. Some of the wines on our lower shelves actually froze at one point. I wouldn’t recommend this unit for any shelf configuration or collection.
