Yes, The wire is required for the Landroid to work. It is also used to provide the mower a path for the Landroid to return to the base to recharge.
You can make it as long as you need it, as long as there is a distance of 3 ft between wire and wire, the Landroid will navigate this path from the front to the back, You can also assist the mower to get from one point to the other by setting up zones (starting points) on the front or back yard, depending on where the base is.

The model may not be used with the Landroid App. This is the WG794 and will be back in stock in August.
