Answer This Question

A:  Dear customer, the full traveling distance for this model is 24”, if less than 24”, it could be caused by a low hydraulic fluid level. We suggest to check the hydraulic fluid level. Thank you,

Q:Do they make a 4 wedge for the 28 ton yardmax wood splitter?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hello Dave, Thank you for reaching out about the 4-way wedge. As of now we are no longer including the 4-way wedge with any of our log splitters. This was a discussion we made after an extensive cost analysis on the benefit added with the wedge V.S. the cost of making it. Currently, we do not have any intention on bringing this wedge back but that could always change in the future. For the foreseeable future the 2-way wedge is the only wedge that will be included.

          It gets the job done!!
I have had this splitter for two years now and it is just as great as it was from day one. It has been very dependable and only has two cons I can think of. I'm an Arborist in Maine and bring home wood we burn every winter. So far I have split about 9 cords of wood with the splitter. Showed my wife how to use it and she loves it. Pros: Power - I've split 3' wide sugar maple bases with this in the upright position. If I can lift it and get it on the rail, it will handle it. Engine - So far no complaints. It sips gas and doesn't seem to have any issues with bolts coming loose or the engine not powerful enough. Hydraulics - I double checked all the fittings when I first received the splitter. After over 45 hrs of use, no leaks. Towing - I towed it 80 miles round trip to work one day. Tows nice and backs up nice too. Cons: Table attachment - I purchased the table attachment to protect the engine. Only problem with that is it makes it more difficult to fill the gas tank. You can lift the cylinder everytime to make it easier, but that is not the most convenient thing to do. Control handle side table - Repeatedly putting heavy logs on that table has caused it to bend down. I'm and arborist so I bring home large logs frequently. This could benefit from a more sturdy table.

I have been very pleased with this, I have worked it hard, and it performs well. I would have given 5 stars, but after only a couple hours use the engine misses under load, including retracting the cylinder. The assembly video on Home Depot was very good, although it was not quite that simple for us. It was like the hoses were 2-3” shorter on ours. A note, extending the cylinder makes it much easier to tilt to the vertical position, or to hook and unhook from the hitch

Assembly was straight forward and fast. 2 people will be required due to the weight. Oil for the engine was included with the splitter. Engine started right up and I proceeded to split 1 cord of Cedar and 2 cords of Oak with no problems.

Powerful HEAVY duty log splitter. First off the crating and packaging was amazing. I assembled it by myself with the aid of a come-along attached to the rafters; took about 2 hours. So far we've split 5 cords of wood without any issues. The only gripe I have is the plastic choke lever on the B&S engine. Felt like it was binding and didn't want to force it fearing it would break. I applied some lithium grease to the lever and that seemed to do the trick. I added a wood table which helped with the larger logs.

I purchased the 28 ton log splitter and I have had it abut a month. Assembly was not too bad until it came time to stand up the ram and couple it to the frame. We were working in the yard, aligning it and getting the pin in was a drag. It works great, had they positioned the lever to run the ram in the upright position so it was easier to operate and added a guard so wood could not fall on and damage the engine I would have given it five stars. As it is I will be repositioning the lever so it's not down behind my leg when running it and I will be fabricating a guard to protect the engine, both things that should have already been designed into the machine. It's easy to start and has plenty of power, though I am only been splitting straight grained Fir with it and have yet to do any tough hardwoods. The other thing I was not impressed with is the four way splitter. As can be seen in the included image the cross splitting wedge is so low it's useless. It is really only goof for small logs up to 8-10 inches in diameter, anything bigger and it's just making a mess of small pieces really only good for kindling, it came off after the first few blocks and will likely never be used again.

After considerable research I decided on the 28 Ton Full beam. The patented 4 blade wedge was a motivating plus among other splitters. It showed it’s value the first time I used it, rendering 4 pieces in one stroke, that’s a 50% increase in firewood and 50% reduction in time and effort. It arrived in a compact (aprox 2’ x 2’ x 6’) wooden crate and it is heavy, real heavy (600ish lbs). It’s clearly a 2 man job, or in my case 2 old guys a cherry picker (engine hoist) to assemble. It had very good assembly instructions and went together easily, the cherry picker helped getting the beam upright. I am very happy with the Yardmax, I give it 5 stars and “Wood” highly recommend it! Thanks to the team at the store in Lewiston Idaho !

Had splitter for about two weeks, works well and starts easy. Took my wife and I about two hours to assemble with the easy instructions. Have split about 3 cord so far, up to 36" fir in vertical position, I like the horizontal position for rounds I can lift. Heavy machine, tows well. Takes longer to stack than to split, definitely better than swing a mall all day. Great machine glad I purchased it.

I'm quite happy with this log splitter. This is my first. It was hard to assemble by myself, but I did it with the help of my tractor. Securing the top during assembly is a must, so it does not fall over. Started up great, first time, and after a few weeks (~5 cord) of use it still starts up fine each pull. My only big complaint, and it's not Yardmax's fault, is it does have trouble getting through some of the knotty white oak I give it. I was not 100% sure of the tonnage I required. But I figured, for my residential-only usage, I would live with what 28 tons could do. Next size up stepped up to a larger engine and more gas consumption. I'm also on the fence about the 4-way splitting wedge. With clear wood it's great, but in knotty wood it creates more problems and stresses the machine more. I've learned to use just the top edge wedge to do single splits where better. It's a pretty quiet machine too. I do not need to wear ear protection. My wife commented that the wood is now quite messy. Absolutely, relative to my past hand splitting. There's much more ripping and tearing and splintering now. But way faster and with far less wear and tear on me. Hope to have many years with this splitter.
