Yardmax Chipper is a BEAST!
I have had my chipper since mid-April and I’m very impressed with it. It is a beast and well worth the money. It’s more of a chipper than shredder though. I have a small wooded piece of property and use this to clean up after storms. I bought the yardmax because of the Briggs and Stratton engine and it does not disappoint. Starts very easily. I did remove the OSHA plate after the 1st day of use, like suggested in other reviews. This allows the mulch to discharge more fluidly. DO NOT BUY THE EXTENDED SERVICE PLAN. ASURION CANNOT SERVICE. In reality anything that needs to be replaced is going to be wear and tear anyway so the plan is just a waste of money. Yardmax customer service is great though. You actually get a live person without any effort.

We've used the chipper/shredder twice for just over 2 hours. It has only jammed once, but we were able to clear it easily because of the great design that allows you to remove one bolt and slide open the cuttingblade cover. We wish that branches with slight curves would feed without getting lodged. To prevent it, we have done more branch prep than we anticipated. Very sturdy piece of equipment. It was missing 2 mounting bolts, washers, and nuts when we unpacked it. A quick call to Yardmax and they sent them out right away - problem solved! Looking forward to years of use from this machine!

AMAZING Chipper, Not Really a Shredder
I purchased this chipper after returning a Tazz unit that did not live up to its hype. I am so glad I went with this Yardmax unit. It chips branches with ease and stays hungry for more. The easy access panel makes clearing clogs super simple, takes less than a few minutes to clean on the rare occassion it does clog up. I find it best to let fresh cut branches dry out for a couple weeks, this seems to produce nice uniform wood chips compared to chipping a fresh green cut branch. When chipping green wood it still chips it nicely, but you end up with some long shredded pieces of wood instead of all chips. I do not understand why this is labeled as a chipper/shredder as it does not have hammers to shred any material, only two blades for chipping. Green material and dry leaves that are put down the hopper come out nearly unchanged and can cause the unit to clog up easily if fed too much. That being said, I would strongly suggest getting this unit as a dedicated chipper as it does wonders on just about anything you can fit down its chute, and purchase a cheap electric dedicated mulcher for your shredding needs. This unit is very easy to feed compared to other unites because you rarely need to trim branches to fit, it has a very wide opening.

      Tires are terrible *UPDATE*
I do not see any way to edit or update my first review titled "Tires are terrible" so I will make a new one. I am giving 2 more stars based on Yardmax's customer service alone. On the same day I wrote the initial review I emailed Yardmax about my problem with the tires/wheels. The very next morning I received a call from them wanting to fix the problem. Today I received two new wheel assemblies in the mail no charge under the warranty. I installed the wheels and they seem to be okay. They are the same plastic as before so hopefully they will last. As per my first review the chipper works great and ate up everything I put in it. It is very solidly built and if it weren't for the cheep plastic wheel rims this would be a 5 star piece of equipment. Excellent customer service Yardmax, put some steel wheels on this thing and it will be much better.

        Tires are terrible
The chipper works well and is able to chip everything I needed it for. The tires are absolutely terrible and they will not stay on the rims at all no matter what the air pressure is set to. The rims are plastic junk and the bore diameter is an odd size so I cannot find any replacement wheels anywhere that will fit on the axle. the axle is an odd size probably metric. 3/4 inch bore standard wheels will not fit it. If it were not for the junk wheels on this it would be a great chipper. pretty useless if you can not even move it around the property by hand.

          Well Made and Very Efficient
I am extremely pleased by the design and quality of materials used. It was easy to put together, but the feed shoot is very heavy and may require 2 people to mount that. The machine is bolted down to a wood skid and a lot of care was taken to ensure the unit doesn't get damaged in shipping. It fit easily in the back of the Toyota Sienna, but it is very heavy and makes it difficult to load and unload. Would have benefited from bringing trailer. I have used it for several hours and found that if you cut 3" diameter branches in 2'to 3' lengths I had no trouble with jamming. It will take branches with lots of limbs/branches, so it kept me from having to do a much trimming before putting it down the feeder. Great time saver.

            Doesn't handle anywhere near 3"
I chose this mostly because it was the ONLY chipper they carry in store and we needed one quickly to clean up after some logging. We picked this up pre-assembled (because apparently, they pre-assemble all chippers before selling them.) The tires were completely flat but otherwise seemed to be assembled okay. We have used it 3 times and things are already breaking. There's a flap over the output chute that opens when the rotor is spinning, and one of the welds just snapped, making it flop over and wedge itself closed, which of course jammed up the machine. Other complaints- anything over 2" will kill the motor unless you cut it up into about 18" pieces, which completely defeats the purpose of having a chipper. I could just cut it that size and use it for firewood if I wanted to put in that kind of time. I really needed this to do 3" branches as advertised. Another complaint- the output chute has an adjustable arm to aim your chips down low or to shoot out to the side. It will NOT stay where you put it. No matter how tight you push down the tightening lever, the vibration of the machine will shake it loose, and it will end up pointed straight down, blocking the output. Also, the arm is too low to put a garbage can under it, so you either have a huge pile on the ground (it shoots FAR, regardless of where it's aimed), or you have someone else hold a bag/can under the shoot, which is risky with how fast things fly out. Overall, I am not impressed with this chipper as it doesn't perform as advertised, and I will be returning it for something with a stronger motor.

Before returning, please call our Service and Support team. We may be able to help you make some adjustments to get your chipper functioning as advertised – because 3" branches should be no big deal for this chipper. Capable!
This chipper was perfect for all of the branches in our yard and I'm certain I'm going to be using it for years to come. It chewed through the Pine, Maple, Cedar, Aspen, and Russian Olive branches without any stress. It didn't really like the Walnut, but it slowly made it through it. I love the large upper hopper which makes it easy to push branches from bushes into it without any worry of my hands getting anywhere near the blades. This is a well built piece machine for any average backyard with lots of trees.

A no frill, well built wood chipper . The instruction manual is so so but the only thing to assemble was the hopper. Add the included oil, put gas in and run. I was surprised it started on the very first pull, no choke. This thing is a beast. I have put nothing over 1.5" through it because anything larger I can use for backyard wood burning purposes, so I haven't had any bog issues other reviewers have had. A lot of actual use comes down to common sense. Fantastic purchase that will serve me well for a long time.

Great chipper if branches are dry, and it's a good chipper but not a shredder
As Greg stated in his March review, the machine does well as long as the wood isn't green. With maybe five hours on the machine, I've experienced three incidents where small green branches (1/2 inch or less cut within 6 months) wrap themselves around the flywheel shaft so tightly that they slow the machine down dramatically or stop it completely. In order to remove the pieces, the intake chute must be removed (pain) and the top access plate opened (easy) and the flywheel must be turned by hand very carefully so as not to get cut hands by the blades. This process probably takes 15-30 minutes depending on how tightly the branches are wrapped. This is a major design flaw and because of it I will likely sell it in the spring and buy a PTO chipper for my tractor. Another thing is that this is NOT a shredder, it is only a chipper. I have a 90s era Bolens (Garden Way) 8hp machine that is equipped with both a small flywheel for chipping and a flail type mechanism for shredding. What I've been doing is taking the chips from the Yardmax unit and putting them through the Bolens shredder and my wife uses it for paths in her garden. If you can stick to larger than 1/2" up to 3" green and up to 3" dry stuff, and don't need a shredder, the Yardmax works great. And the Briggs engine usually starts on the first pull, even after sitting for months.
