Yard Machines 21 in. 140 cc OHV Briggs and Stratton Walk Behind Gas Push Mower is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 1239.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from DON'T BUY Bought this mower and the 2 yr extended warranty. Started right up. Used it three times. Now it won't start. Called Home Depot, they referred me to MTD. Called MTD, they referred me to Briggs and Stratton. Called B&S, they told me to take it to an authorized repair shop. When I stopped to discuss it, they said these mowers do not handle ethanol-blended gas, as it eats the seals up. When I dropped it off to be worked on, the repair guy said the auto-controlled choke probably needs adjustment. Google search on MTD mowers reveals the horror story of mowers ceasing to function almost immediately, parts breaking, belts having to be replaced again and again, bearings going out, carburetor issues, etc. So many brand have been bought by Chinese manufacturers, almost none of them are the company you remember and counted on. I'm going back to Home Depot to get the extended warranty back. There is no way this mower is going to live long enough to be able to use it (the warranty).

We bought this mower because the picture showed an uneven terrain with obstacles. We're making trails on 37 acres of wooded, hilly property and this was a "cheaper" alternative to a box blade. This mower has been upill, downhill, gone over stumps, rocks and everything in its path and it's still going strong. We have made lots of trails and only had to clean out the air filter. Even if I had to buy another one to complete the miles of trails we're making, it'll definitely be worth it. It takes a beating and definitely lives up to its potential of being able to go over uneven terrain with obstacles. Great product!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 4 years with no oil or spark plug change and still running great I brought this lawn mower 4 years ago after i got tired of borrowing everyone else mower for my new home, honestly one of the best purchase items for my yard ever, I know it's not good and this was the first year 2014; I change my blade and service the mower but I have not done NOTHING to this thing for four years and it cranks on first pull and still cutting like a champ. You can waste your money on one of those big name mowers if you want but its not the mower that makes your yard looks great, it's the yearly process of maintaining the yard that makes it beautiful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from quick replacement mower Light weight mower, starts with one pull. Easy to assemble right out of the box. The catch bag tends to be a pain to use, gets hooked on the pull cord when taking it off. But overall good mower for the price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK but needs some tips for buyers This mower out of box is great for someone with little mechanical skill. Pull the cord and go. The biggest tip i can give is use high octane gas and clean the bottom frequently. Low octane gas in this mower will cause your easy to start mower to turn into a worthless piece of metal on wheels. I had to drain the fuel line and use engine starter directly on the carborator to get this mower running after a couple months in the garage. I used 92 octane in a can from my local hardware store, changed the spark plug for good measure and cleaned the bottom out thoroughly . My mower is running fine again Not a bad mower for the price, just treat it like a princess because it will certainly act like one if you don't.

The problem is in just over two years its stopped working three times. The first time was after maybe a month and a half. I took the air filter off, fuel line, and checked what I could and when I put it back together it worked fine. No big deal, maybe something was just loose from shipping? The second time was a short while later when it didn't start in the spring. It had been properly prepared for storage, winterized and kept in the shed. When I took it in the warranty didn't cover it as "maintenance" which seemed questionable as everything had been changed before it was stored (minus fuel/ oil). Now, after having it for a little over 2 years its broken down again. Assuming this time would cost comparable to the last "repair" it would be nearing the price of the mower new, which is pretty frustrating. I absolutely would not suggest this mower.

I used the other in my lawn care business and wore it out. Probably had 500 hours on it. Starts quickly and runs strong. Light weight and easy to maneuver. Bag capacity is a little small but if it was much bigger I guess the extra weight when full would probably be a drawback. I would buy another one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from disappointed Bought this mower to replace a 10 year old Yard Machine handed down from my parents that took a good deal of abuse. The engine finally went on it, and instead of trying to fix it I figured I'd just buy a new one. Picked this model because of the familiarity and durability of the previous model. Boy, was that a mistake. Assembly was super easy, and I had it up and running in about 30 minutes time. Went to do some mowing around our garden. First pass through high grass, mower stopped. Started it back up, no problem. Stopped again, and noticed that I couldn't pull on the starter cord to get it going. Moved the mower a bit, and it had hit a small rock. Was able to start the mower, it coughed a bit and died. Turned it over and noticed that the blade had bent! My previous Yard Machine ran over rocks, sticks, tree limbs, and other yard debris all the time and never stopped, and the blade definitely didn't bend. Needless to say, this guy is going back today and I'll be getting a different mower from a different company.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just what I needed For the money, this mower is great. The variable height for the wheels is easily switched and allows you to not completely kill your overgrown lawn the first time that you mow it(which is what I almost did). My main qualm would be that it came missing a particular bolt, which braced the arms that you push against, making the first couple runs a bit shaky. I did find a bolt in my shed that kind of fits, so we're doing a bit better now. My shipping actually bent the front wheel as well, but nothing that defers the effectiveness of the mower as whole. As an entry level mower, this is great. It easily covers my back yard which is probably 1800 square feet. The bolts in the arms remove pretty quickly to make this a bit easier to store and they yank cord is pretty forgiving on start up. I've actually stopped using the collector bag after the first run, as the falling grass adds a bit of mulch. I may use it again in the future, but I had to change it out every 600sqft or so, which became bothersome.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great equipment The equipment is easy to assemble, has a bag that is easy to pull and empty, great high wheels, and very inexpensive... Great for a small yard, but not for a large yard because it's not self-propelled machine

I used to buy the Toro's that pull you for $300+, bought this cause i was having issues again with the TORO. I got to say forget the pulling mechicnism, this mower doesnt need one. It is so light i can literally run with it and mow. It does a great job, I cant complain, glad I decided to buy it, cause now I saved over $100 anytime I need a new mower.

I am 32 years young and this is the first time I have ever needed a mower or mowed grass. The yard machine was very easy to assemble, instructions were clear, and it even came with the oil to put into the engine. The mower started on the first attempt and I immediately felt accomplished. The wheels were very easy to adjust to the height that I needed. Needless to say this is a great product and very easy to use. I would definitely recommend this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Warranty, what warranty? Purchased in June, after a month the mower starts sputtering. Home Depot would not accept a return after 30 days. Tried to get the manufacturer to honor their 2-year warranty. Turns out it was the magneto/ignition coil that was failing and failed. Since it was part of the engine, the manufacturer of the lawn mower says you have to go through Briggs and Stratton, their 2-year warranty only covers "everything but the engine." When the engine serial number is run, it turns out that the NEW mower has an engine that was built MORE than 2 years ago, so there is no warranty directly from Briggs and Stratton--you have to get Yard Machines to honor it. They won't unless I have an independent expert certify that it was the magneto. I had to buy a new ignition coil for $25. It works fine now. Yard Machines will NOT reimburse since they don't know "for sure" that the magneto was defective. Think now--it did not work. The magneto was replaced and it works. That should be proof enough that the magneto was defective--Yard Machines does not want the old magneto (ohm meter shows open circuit.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect for my needs I was looking for a very basic mower as I have whittled my lawn area down to maybe 600 sq ft of level turf, so my ratings are in that context. I didn't want self-propelled for example and this mower allowed me to avoid that. The assembly required was pretty straight forward, it starts without extraordinary effort though not on the first pull as my previous one did (the chassis gave up on that one). The wheel height adjustment is easier than what I was accustomed to. I didn't give it 5 stars mostly because I have limited use to date and there is nothing special about it. The grass catcher bag seems a bit small and mounts strangely. This machine is adequate for me but if your yard is larger, you may want something bigger.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A nice, easy starting mower Just used the mower for the first time (February) to pick up leaves in the yard, being disabled and with a bad knee this mower made it easy. Starts right up on the first pull and runs like a dream. The Bag is a little small, the leaves filled it right up, but grass clippings will be no problem with this size of bag. All I had to do to put it together was remove it from the box and unfold the handle, simple and easy.

Fortunately, right after pulling it off the shelf, another customer stopped us to rave about the yard machine mower. We were appreciative for the unsolicited feedback because we didn’t know what to expect even after reading positive reviews. Nonetheless, my husband loves the mulching capability.
Date published: 2018-04-17
Rated 4 out of 5 by from not for fast growing or medium sized lawns the mower starts great and does a fantastic job at cutting, but the bag is very small and is angled up too far. This makes it so the grass doesn't fill the bag more than halfway before choking the mower and making it stall. It requires more bag dumping than any mower I've ever used which means more labor on my part. If you aren't using the bag I'm sure it will do just fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from What I Expected I have a yard that collects a lot of moisture and it's easy to cut with this mower. Next time I may upgrade to a self propelled mower because while it's easy to cut, it's not easy to push or easily maneuverable. I would prefer that the bag is larger. I usually have to dump it twice because I'm only able to cut about 1/3 of my yard before I empty it and I sit on a 1/4 lot. Assembly took about 20 minutes and the instructions are pretty much useless. It's good for the price and it's what I expected. A simple mower and it leaves my yard looking fantastic.
Date published: 2016-05-03
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible purchase The mower broke down twice within 3 months of purchasing (no more than 8 uses). The second failure was outside of the manufacturer warranty, so fixing it involved out of pocket expenses. After the initial repair, the mower lasted the majority of the next season without problems, then the engine completely failed by the end of year two. Thow away after 2 seasons and $80 in repairs. I had been sold on this motor being highly durable with no maintanence, but my experience was quite the opposite.
Date published: 2015-03-09
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lasted one season... like so many other people Just like so many others who have written here, lasted one season and then never started again. Costs more than a new one to fix it. Genius strategy for Briggs and Stratton (the actual manufacture of this motor), if you sell an engine that only lasts a year, people buy more motors! Except in my case, will be the last time for B&S. Junk. With this high of a failure rate it cannot be an accident. Buyer beware.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looking at a Honda Purchased mower 4 years ago and had problems with the carburater 2 months after purchasing it. Had to have carburater cleaned every year even though I used fresh gas and added Seafoam. Had several repairmen comment that the Briggs and Stratton 500 series engine was a problem engine. Just had to junk the mower after the cost to repair was more than the mower. Usually have had great luck with Briggs and Stratton, mowing grass over 35 years and normally had great luck. Last MTD lasted me over 15 years. Wife's uncle used to work in the quality control dept at Briggs and Stratton and reported that they have undergone a lot of cost cutting measures recently, and I do believe that it shows in their product. Looking at a Honda now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great I use this mower on small front and back lawns. It was easy to assemble, and started on the first pull. It cuts the lawn very evenly; it's light weight and big rear wheels makes it easy to push and maneuver. It's continued to start on the first pull each time I've used it, and it hasn't consumed any oil... but I only have a few hours on it so far. It's relatively quiet for a gas mower, but you definitely need ear protection while using it. The rear bag does a good job of grass collection. The only problem I've had is the rear door/cover (the plastic thing in the back that seals the mower if you mulch or rests on the bag) collects a bunch of grass the you have to clean out when you remove the bag (or that grass just falls on the ground). Not a big deal - just a little annoyance that my previous mower didn't have. Overall, I'm very happy with this mower so far!

Once I placed this contraption onto my yard it started to do what it stated it would do. It cut my yard and I thanked it for doing so. We now have become best friends since it's as loud as my wife though I can turn my lawn mower off when I've had enough. The spark plug was gapped correctly and bag of oil that's supplied is also very conveniently easy to pour.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overall I am satisfied so far This is a light weight mower that has met my expecations. It will not handle long grass (>2") or wet grass in anyway. So far it starts well (no choke fitted or required), is not too noisy and has worked fine for me. My only real complaint is that one of the screws that holds the handle into the body of the mower I cannot get to thread. Overall I am satisfied after 2 months of ownership.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worked great the first year then............. I should have heeded the advice of some bad reviews. This mower worked just fine for the first year. The second season, not so well. I could not get it to start. I did not leave gas in the tank (always empty small engines) but did not change the oil since it was only 7 months old. So, I took apart the carburetor and cleaned it though it all looked spotless. Put it back together and and it only starts if I spray fluid in the carb., then it runs fine. Checked the choke cable because apparently it gets stuck on this mower. No problems there. It only starts if I spray into carb. which is a pain in the butt. "Ready start " is not so much.

This one was not up to it. My yard has above average dust and some small tree debris. I had used a Yard Machine (YM) with a Briggs & Stratton (BS) 675ex 190cc OHC engine for many years with no problems. When time for a new mower, this model was at a similar price point so I bought it. Big mistake. Besides for having a slightly smaller engine (BS 550ex 140cc), this lawn mower has not lived up to the last YM with BS engine. This YM lawn mower will not start after one use. Yep, after only one use, it's dead. Cleaned out the air filter. Either the spark plug fouled, the carburetor is already plugged up or some other engine problem after only one use. Needless to say, I'm really disappointed in this YM and Briggs & Stratton engine. I can't be doing full tune up after every mowing. Useless mower and engine. I absolutely do not recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It started right up on the first pull and every pull thereafter. I would suggest this to anybody. I have had no problems whatsoever and it truly started right up.
