At what height should I cut my lawn?

Asked by: Joed
Bermuda should be cut pretty low. <1.5". However, most people don't have a level enough lawn to do that with a rotary mower, or a reel mower. Keep in mind that the only way to keep your lawn at 1.5 is to scalp it in the spring before green up and then maintain at that height (Bermuda only). The lower grass height will result in a denser lawn, crowding out weeds better than tall grass. The opposite of what the other guy said. Lower grass height will also require more maintenance (alfalfa for fertilizer, for example) every 30-45 days on a strict watering schedule. If your lawn is level, and I mean golf course level...skip the rotary and get a gas reel mower. You won't regret it.

My yard often gets loose twigs and sticks from trees and bushes, can this mower plow through those without issue? or do you recommend picking them up before mowing? I plan on using the Grass Bag not side discharge. Thanks.
Asked by: CCSmooth
Yes it can. I imagine it will dull the blade faster, but the engine doesn't complain.

21 in. 163cc OHV Briggs & Stratton Walk Behind Gas Lawn Mower is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 310.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from No oil change is a joke! Have this mower for two years now. Started sounding funny last time I used it. Decided to open it up since warranty was past, and found scored bearing bore at the top of the crank. The piston was sludged up, and rings and valve tappets were badly carboned and starting to stick. I've only used Briggs & Stratton oil when topping up. If they don't want you to change the oil, they should put some type of filter on to capture the metal particles and dirt that comes from a running engine.

Due to a very poorly designed rear wheel height adjustment mechanism the two(2) highest settings cannot be utilized. There are five (5) rear wheel settings and only the 3 lowest settings can be used; lowest, low moderate and moderate. When you attempt to use high moderate the rear wheel begin to severely rub against the mower deck. If you try to use the highest cutting level the wheels won't even turn. The wheels just skid as if brakes have been applied. Yes, it's that bad. This engineering and design flaw should never have occurred. Other than that the mower blade cuts well and the Briggs and Stratton engine runs smooth and powerfully.

I love the way this mower is SO light & easy to maneuver that I can guide it easily over the rough terrain in parts of my yard. I finally learned not to get features that I don't really use which make the mower heavy. This mower starts so easily, too. I can't think of anything that I dislike about it. The 163cc Briggs & Stratton motor has all the power that I need to cut down heavy weeds & plants such as alfalfa growing in my extended yard. I have had my Yard Machine for about 2 months & was delighted to have it delivered to me. I definitely like it much better than the mower that I had previously. Grass that is heavy & wet does not seem to clog going into the bag as it did on the mower that I had prior to this one. It exceeds my expectations in every way. Please see in attached photo how a 72 year old woman can pull the mower back up a hill because it is so light!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Briggs and Stratton push lawnmower I purchased this lawn more last week, I've only used it once so far but it performed very well. The price that I paid for this lawnmower I think was reasonable and I was able to use a coupon for 10% off so that was also a good thing. I have had lawnmowers in the past with Briggs and Stratton engines and I have always found that engine to be excellent. I am very satisfied with my purchase this far.

After the third mow, it developed a severe rattle in the upper blade region. Tightened the blade, but still got the rattle; it was severe enough that the starter line would recoil. Then it started spitting white smoke. Oil level was fine, I bled the fuel line ... and it continued. I am taking this lemon back to Home Depot tomorrow (10-11-17) for a refund.

That mower still works fine but I needed a second one, and this new one is even better: no manual choke or priming bubble. But just like my old mower, it starts with only 1 or 2 pulls of the cord. The Briggs & Stratton motor is a workhorse and I intentionally sought out a mower with a B&S motor. This new mower is easy to handle. It's not self-propelled but doesn't need it. My old mower was purchased to mow 3/4 acre of lawn in the Rockies. This new one is for a hilly 3/4 acre of fescue grass in the Piedmonts and works just as well. Also, changing the wheel height is much easier than my 15-yr old version. The minor assembly is not hard but the pictures on the box do not help; do it with the instructions instead. Also, the grass catcher bag is a bit stiff and doesn't smoothly slide onto the sleeve frame--I only use the mulcher side chute so haven't yet given another the grass catcher another try yet. I strongly recommend this tough little mower. I'm not the handyman type, so any machine that works like it should, year after year, is my choice.

After reading many reviews on many lawn mowers I was starting to wonder if there was any good ones out there. I came across a review written by man who is a small engine mechanic. He stated he gets many types of mowers in his shop that folks complained would not start. He went on to say how that 99% of them it was caused by the owner and not the manufacturer. With the addition (watering down) of ethenol in fuel it is important to follow directions. I took the leap of faith and bought this mower. Set up in under 10 minutes. Take the time and read the set up instructions they are clear and precise. Mower started on first pull. Stopped and started several times for a glass of sweet tea and the mower started first pull every time. Grass was very tall thanks to Irmagedon. Used the side discharge to knock it down then bag to pick up. Not a hiccup. It is light weight and rolls easily. The height adjustment was simple, one for the front and one for the back. I am very happy with the purchase.
