Questions & Answers

Will this product help to remove kitchen drain odors?

Periodically, my kitchen drain starts to smell unpleasant. It's a somewhat rotten organic odor. I have tried using chemicals (sodium hydroxide, bleach) but the only thing that really works is for me to take it all apart (drain, pipes, trap) and clean it by hand. Can you tell me whether these enzymes will get rid of that kind of odor?
Asked by: MM
It would help, but ZEP also makes an garbage disposal odor remover which works very well.

If I use this type of drain build up remover will it also get rid of drain flies?

Asked by: Mark
It is recommended as PART of a Drain Fly treatment program. 1. Clean drain traps 2. Pour Boiling water down drain to soften pipe buildup 3. Use Zep Drain Buildup Remover(Enzyme/Gel) Must treat everyday for 7 days 4. Clean Drains with Drain Brush 5. Use Zep Drain Cleaner monthly 6. Use Drain fly traps(homemade see online)

Bought a new top load washer (after a front loader) and water/soap suds were overflowing from laundry stack. Home Depot sales person suggested this product along with an auger. First attempt with auger, could not move auger into line move than a few feet. Kept adding ZEP, waiting and each time over several days the auger would go further into the line. Finally, after two bottles over 4 days we were able to clear the partial blockage and no more laundry overflow issues! Will now use this product monthly to maintain lines.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Patience Is Needed I have been using this product for a number of years and have been very pleased. When we first started using it, the drains ran a little faster and then clogged all of a sudden. I called the plumber who recommended this product and told him what happened. I was told that it’s very possible that a large chunk broke free and is blocking the drain. The plumber told me to use it for another three days and see what happens. On the second day one of my children used the shower and the water drained pretty quickly. I continued to use it until there was no backup. After that, I used it twice a month and my drains are working like new. But you need to be patient. You’ll be glad you waited.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Well But Takes a While This ZEP 64 oz. Drain Care worked well but it is important to note that it is NOT a clog remover. I used this on on my wife's sink in our master bathroom. She always rinses her hair down the sink which slowly builds up and slows the drain. After running hot water for a couple of minutes, I poured 8 oz. of Drain Care down the drain, then followed that with 16 oz of hot water. It's best if you let it sit for about six hours. I let it sit the entire day while we were at work. The drain now flows with no backup at all. Drain Care works well just remember it's not for clogs but more for maintenance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nontoxic Alternative that Works for Slow Drains I bought this because I wanted a nontoxic alternative. Most drain cleaners use sodium hydroxide which is highly caustic while this product uses enzymes. However, because it doesn't use dangerous chemicals, it will take more time to clear a drain. I used it twice a day for few days in a row for my shower drain. It did work but it took some time. You must also read the directions which tell you to use hot water to activate the enzymes. I would only recommend this for minor slow drains and not for drain blockages. I inspected a section of pipe after use and noticed the inside of the pipe looked almost completely clean.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from MAKES THINGS WORSE I used this for a slow drain in bathtub, I followed directions for three days. Let it sit overnight, flush with hot water, and on the third day the water isn't going down AT all! It was better before I used this product, at least I had water flowing down the drain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well The drain plug in our shower is design such that every single strand of hair makes it down the drain. Of course this results in clogs. I've recently switched to a product that helps prevent clogs, but I still keep this product on hand for times I feel water isn't draining quite as fast as it should, not only in the showers but in our sinks as well. It does a much better job than a store brand drain cleaner I used to buy. The only downside is for it to work as designed, you have to remember to use it 3 days in a row, and you can't use the drain for 6 hours after use. It can be a slight inconvenience, but it's worth the sacrifice for clear pipes.

The kitchen sink has a long and I assume nearly level run. When it starts running slow I would have to plunge or use the bulb on a hose to really push it clear and get it flowing again. The master bath shower drain catches all the hair and slows down so I would have to pull the drain cover and clean out the massive hair ball plug. I put a cap full of the enzyme stuff down the shower drain and it dissolved the hair ball. I have to put a couple of capfuls down the kitchen drains and flush with enough water to get it into the main long line. The enzymes literally eat the biofilm, sludge, hair and other fun stuff in the drains. The trick is finding a time when you will not use the drains for several hours while the enzymes do their thing.
