    Yes. Once I loosed and pulled the rod to the right length, twisting it made it very slightly longer to make a good tight fit.

    The minimum length of the rod is 24 inches. Since there needs to be some degree of tension for the rob to hold in place I would suggest the smallest space you use it in be no shorter than 25 inches.

    New Rod. It says pull apart to extend. I can twist only the small tube, and then only TOWARD me. But nothing happens. Is it defective?

    First you can pull it apart to your, not 100 percent exact size. My space was 34 inches, so from 27 inches I had to extend it first, then twist the small rod until it fit tight.

    Does it rust after a few months? Or a few years?

    Chris, This rod is rust resistant and should last years, not months. Unfortunately all metal will eventually rust except aluminum and stainless steel, they are rust proof.     I bought this for inside a giant terrarium, so it's holding on glass. It takes a moment to figure out, especially if you go the the wrong way or it pops off. Once I got it in there, it has been holding strong. No problems. :)
