Questions & Answers

Tension or Fixed?

Why does the title say "Builder 41 in. - 72 in. Steel Tension Shower Rod in Chrome" but the specifications say it's "Fixed?" How can it be both--and, if it can't, which one is it?

The instructions are on the back of the label attached to the rod. It's a fairly simple process. Hardware is included.

Chrome Finishing is fine but the steel rod is a bit too thin in material, reason may be the factory try to keep it light in weight. The rod is weld joint rod, there will a risk of rod may split when the Rod get rust internally. That is most common happen on weld steel rod. Two mounting plastic plate is barely a regular plastic there you may need additional washer for the screw to hold it tight on the wall. If base ont he screw on the plastic plate, there may be a chance of the screw may slip off from the plastic plate. The steel rod insert to each other only there is a piece of clear plastic sleeve as a rod holder, that is weak too. When I try to pull the rod to adjust the distant it keep sliding around which I found that plastic sleeve cannot hold them tightly. For safety issue, I will use glue to glue them together. If you're not bare of the quality for a simple cheap shower rod. the only matter is install it carefully, I believe it still keep fine for you.

From the start I though this would be great product. This in my opinion would be something maybe I would put in a rental home or apartment. It did not work out too well for me in my home application....and so I went back to Home Depot and upgraded to a better shower curtain rod. First off the end caps are made of plastic which I was not very happy with and the plastic piece in the middle of the two rods would not stay in place when adjusting the size of the rod ,very flimsy. After I managed to get the rod up it would not support the weight of a cloth material curtain together with a shower liner behind it and began to bend in the middle. I ended up going back to Home Depot buying a stainless steel curtain rod with a spring in the unit and heavy duty rubber ends for a few dollars more. So my take on this is ,if your on a budget and just using a lightweight curtain it may work out fine. Enclosed is a few photos of curtain rod I tried to use and the one I ended up using that worked great for my application....

This rod has a nice chrome finish and can fit any opening between 41 and 72 inches. Instead of the typical spin to tighten, it screws to the wall. At 72 inches it will definitely fit all standard size tub/shower surrounds. Screws and wall anchors are included as well as a nice looking cover so you don't see the screws. Very attractive finish. The reason it didn't get five stars is that ,although it feels very sturdy at 48", when extended to a standard size tub/shower surround it felt a little light duty. I think for most people it would never be a problem. We have four wild kids though. They'll give it a little rougher test than most people. I think that if you live with sane people over 10 years old, you should be fine with this though.

The installation is simple but does require some screwing of mounting plates to the wall. There are two nylon? Disks that get screwed to the walls on either side. Then the rod drops in on them and cover plates are moved over the end disks. Not difficult to do but you do need to ensure that you get the disks in the right place as any adjustment of location will require new screwing. The rod is made from two pieces of tube, with one fitting inside the other to allow different lengths. At their join is a small plastic ring is to keep water from getting inside the larger tube. Ensure this is properly snugged up to it. All the fastening hardware is included. It looks smart and solid.

After using a pressure shower curtain rod that would occasionally fall down, I decided to try a new steel rod that is screwed to the wall. This Builder 41" rod expands to fit my 60" bath opening, and is nicely chromed so that it looks attractive and shouldn't rust. 2 screws at either end attaches a clever plastic cap that attaches to the end of the rod. Then a metal cover snaps over it, and you are finished with the install. Simple and easy and seems very secure. The rod is still light weight, but seems strong enough to handle a heavy outside shower curtain and an inside clear liner. I like the design and easy of installation and expect to get many years of use out of it.

When I got this product I seen the word tension and immediately thought that is was a spring loaded tension rod with no drilling required but I was grossly mistaken. That being said i mounted the rod using the provided screws. One thing i noticed that I didnt like was the white anchors on the inside do not stay on the pole good if you hang it at a non gravity friendly angle. Also the flange that goes over then end does not stay on the pole securely to hide the ancor. Once I did get everything put together right it was a sturdy rod.

It is heavy (but not too heavy) that it doesn't appear to look like a cheap one. The color is shiny like real stainless steel and the feel of it is of good quality. The installation was a bit more than I expected. I thought it would be like a tension rod but it wasn't. It is connected with screws which makes it harder to switch up but it is there for the long hall. It is sturdy and remains in place. it is an excellent addition to any bath or shower
