Q:Is this stuff supposed to be so thin?? it's like painting with 2% milk. Shook it, stirred it, still thin.
by|Aug 17, 2022
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Eric. Rust-Oleum Zinsser Extreme Adhesion Primer may seem thinner in comparison to paints. When stirring, you want to ensure you are taking care around the edges and bottom, so that there is no settled pigment. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Will this work over a silicone coating (Flex Seal Liquid). If not, do you have a product that will?
    by|Apr 29, 2022
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Silicone caulks and sealers are often difficult if not impossible to paint over. We recommend contacting the manufacturer of the silicone coating to check if it is a paintable surface once cured. We have not tested our products over this coating, though they should perform properly over paintable sealers. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Q:Can this be used to make paint adhere to concrete and/or clay roof tiles? Have an adhesion issue seen in the attached photos, vintage roof from mid-80's in Phoenix, AZ. Thanks in advance for any input.

        Answer This Question

A:  Thanks for reaching out. Zinsser Extreme Adhesion Primer is suitable for use on wood, metal, most plastics, fiberglass, Formica, tile porcelain, glazed block and glass. It is not recommended for concrete or clay roof tiles. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

        by|Apr 1, 2022

A:  It can be used on clay roof tiles, but you have to make sure the tiles are clean. As for concrete I'm not sure. I know it works on Concrete as long as it is not walked on.

I used this to prime a wall that had semi gloss paint in a rental. It went a long way but was a bit pricey. I didn't fully coat the wall but had a good amount on, enough to give it some "flatness" so the new paint could adhere. I went from white, to white primer, to white paint so I can't tell how good it is at "hiding" but you can always ask HD to tint this primer a closer color to your final product to help it cover and blend in.

Great primer. First thing I noticed when opening the can is that there is little to no oder. I've done my share of priming and painting over the years, and while I'm not paid as a professional to do it, I consider myself a pro. This goes on easily and coats fairly well. The photos show a repair patch on one of the walls in my home. One is just with the patch, the other is with the primer coat applied. I used a nice quality brush to apply it. Dried to the touch within about 20 minutes in a 73° room. As its name implies, the adhesion is great. After 24 hours, I tested the prime coat by dragging my finger nail down the wall with decent pressure. This primer is stuck on for good. Great primer. Zinsser in my opinion makes some of the best quality primers on the market.

Excellent primer that covers porcelain, ceramic, formica, kynar and aluminum. The aluminum is what I got it for. It is supposed to be good for all hard to paint surfaces! I use this as not just a primer but exterior coat on our vinyl windows. After many years of weather exposure, there has been some chipping of the coating. It is just paint, so I wanted to use something that is durable and made specifically for that type of surface. This worked wonders! So far so good and it has lived up to its sticking to hard to stick surfaces. You have to wait 24 hours before any additional paint can be applied. You can have this paint tinted too (per the directions). Dry time on this paint under non-sunny conditions was about 35 minutes to the touch.

I used this primer on 2 different surfaces and allowed it to dry for 24 hours prior to adhesion testing. The first was a steel I beam that I did not do any prior surface cleaning or prep. The second was an epoxy patch on my basement wall. I also did not do any prior surface cleaning or prep. The primer wet very well to the steel surface. I used a very strong adhesive tape to demonstrate how well the primer adhered to the steel surface. As can be seen in the video and photos I was not able to pull the primer from the steel. As can be seen, in the photos, on some areas the primer did not wet well to the epoxy. I used the same tape and method to test the adhesion of the primer to the epoxy. On areas that the primer did not wet well, it did not adhere well. On the areas in which the primer wet well, only a small amount of primer came off when tested. I believe, based on this test on 2 hard non porous surfaces, that this primer has superior adhesion properties.

The East side of my house gets the extreme prevailing wind, rain and salt air from the ocean. The paint has a tendency to peel on that side. I used Zinsser bulls eye primer and sealer before and it worked well, so I wanted to try their extreme adhesion primer. It can be brushed or sprayed or rolled as I applied it. I painted over black, unpainted concrete and with one coat you could see through. It did not cover as well as I would have liked so I applied another coat of primer and it came out much better. It smoothed out the surface under and made the hard smooth base coat that I was looking for. I was able to put on a topcoat after 3 hours. Full hardness is achieved in 10 days. It's water based so cleanup was a breeze.

The first thing you're going to notice is the weight ... nearly 13 lbs per gallon! That's because it's 45% solids [principally limestone, resin, and clay]. It's a UMA [Urethane Modified Acrylic] "formulated with XIM techonology". XIM-based products are not unique to Zinsser.] It's suitable for interior and exterior project. One coat is all you'll need. It will not adhere to LDPE or HDPE [polyethylenes] or PP [polypropylene]. And it should NOT be used where the surface will be exposed to continuous water or hot water [e.g. sinks, tubs, etc.] It is tintable at your local store and it was a perfect solution for my project ... painting the PVC sleeves on my deck posts. I had no problems spraying this primer before top-coating [with oil-based exterior paint]. [It MUST be top-coated.]

Great for priming a plastic shed
This certainly did the job of adhering to a plastic outdoor shed. This primer allowed us to then paint the shed to match other buildings on the property. Highly recommend. I do wish I could buy just one gallon of it; two gallons will cover a number of sheds.
