Asked by: Ty
Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer and Sealer is suitable for use on brick and cement-based coatings. Please keep in mind that we do not recommend this product for use on surfaces inside the fireplace or on surfaces that have direct contact with an open flame.

Can this be used as a drywall primer?
Asked by: Painter
Yes of course, but my experience showed that stains come though anyway. It didnt act as a stain blocker despite multiple coats in perfect weather.

I want to paint over the glued down 9x9 tiles in the basement of a 1950s home. Is this the right primer and will it adhere to the tiles?
Asked by: Beth
No it will scrape off. Remove the tiles. Then prime and paint the floor with actual floor primer and paint.

Can I paint this "oil" based primer over existing latex exterior house paint for touch ups? and then topcoat with latex? Seems appropriate, just concerned about latex on bottom, oil over latex, then latex over oil... Thoughts?
Asked by: Laeo
Happy to clear things up, Laeo! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer is suitable for use on exterior new or previously painted wood, hardboard, metal, vinyl, and PVC. Prior to application, it is important that the surface is clean, dry, and free of any loose or peeling coatings. The dry primer film develops full adhesion in 7 days.

1 Gal. White Cover Stain Interior/Exterior Primer and Sealer is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 5.

White Cover Stain Interior/Exterior Primer and Sealer, advertised and sold by Home Depot. I've had good luck using this for interior applications (drywall and cabinetry). This does cover some stains (water marks for example), without a problem. Application over latex is OK, and topcoat with latex is OK. Since it's oil-based, it does have fumes and appropriate ventilation is recommended.

I’ve used this product several times and it is like the Swiss Army knife of primers: - Inexpensive compared to other primers. - Low odor when compared to other oil based paints/primers. - No pre-sanding required (Although I do scuff painted surfaces with a ScotchBrite pad.) - Can prime over latex or oil. - Can topcoat with latex or oil. - Dries fast. - Durable. If it doesn’t work for you, you are either using the wrong product for the application or are applying it wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Primer/Sealer for cat urine & cigarette smoke I've used Zinsser Bin Oil-based primer on 2 separate occassions and both times it has performed beautifully!! The first was a complete remodel of a 2500 sq ft house that had about 9 cats living there. We had to cut out some of the subfloor it was so badly saturated with cat urine. However, we coated the baseboards, walls and pretty much everything else with 2 coats of oil-based zinsser (1 coat probably would have done the trick, but we wanted to make sure the smell was gone). No more cat urine smell - it was amazing. The other occassion was repainting several rooms in a home that was occupied by a heavy smoker (ie. heavy deposits on the walls). We tried to clean the gunk off the walls the best we could with several cleaners because we didn't believe that zinsser would seal it and it would bleed through. However, much to our amazement, 1 coat of zinsser sealed it right up and we painted over it and the smoke smell was gone too. I would use Kilz 2 for basic priming/sealing but if you need a really good sealant - zinsser bin is the way to go!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not block tannin from simple materials such as plywood. It bleeds through despite multiple coats. I was certain I had the right product, it was oil based which is always effective, the label even says it's a bond coat and stain blocker which includes oils from wood such as tannin which can be expected from cedar and plywood. I was painting the underside eves of my grandmother's house who recently had her very expensive roof put on also by home depot. The plywood sheeting was new and she wanted them painted. So as her grandson and having experience in painting and such I was quite embarrassed when she asked why the wood was bleeding through despite the high quality primer I bought. So after getting a headache from the heavy oil fumes from putting several coats down i finally finished one side of the house and quit. I won't return to this primer again. Also, it was cloudy, not raining, and about 70% humidity and 70F temperature. If that's important to you. Avoid this product if you can.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome for cabinetry! The best primer for cabinetry is any Zinsser product. This went on buttery smooth with no brush strokes after we did our prep work. Highly recommended.
