Is their a certain time limit where you have to paint over the Peel Stop. If I put a coat of Peel Stop over the surface of the siding, could I wait a day and put a coat of paint on it the next day or does the paint need to go on sooner then that?
Asked by: Jared
Happy to help, Jared! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Peel Stops Triple Thick Binding Primer dries to the touch in 30 minutes and can be primed or painted in 2 hours. Lower temperatures and higher humidity can prolong dry time. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. If conditions do not permit prompt drying, allow Peel Stop to dry overnight before priming or painting. Do not apply Peel Stop is rain is expected within 8 hours of priming or topcoating.

It did not fill the small defects on the wall that I patched and sanded extensively. IMO it is not good for smooth plaster walls. It went on weirdly--thick in some spots and thin in others, even though I stirred it extensively. I should have used another product instead of listening to home depot's paint person.

The negative reviews have something in common, they expect this primer to cover the surface and complain it goes on thin. They are right! But that's not what it's meant o do. What it will do is bond what ever paint you put on top of it, as it bonds itself to whatever surface you put it on. It's like a glue between the paint and the surface. This product is top of the line and does what it says. It's so good, I primed an outdoor fence with it. I initially used a top stain & sealer but the horizontal portions of the boards kept peeling up. I put this stuff on and no peeling, this is the third year now and it rains a lot here in Washington. If you use this as the surfaces initial primer, it will bond whatever you put on top of it like glue. This is good stuff.

However, I believe it is because it is water based and perhaps the paint I was covering was not. It seemed very thin to me and if you read the instructions it clearly states many things that it does not do. So, not saying it is a bad product, it just didn't meet my expectations.

I first sanded loose paint and used recommended MH Ready Patch on minor cracks and splits. Then 3 coats of Peel Stop on waiting 3 hours between coats then waiting overnight before putting on grey finish coat. I was hoping the 3 coats of Peel Stop would smooth out where the original paint had peeled off and the wood grain but it did not (see picture). The Peel Stop gloops out thick but after you brush it on does not seem to be any thicker than normal acrylic latex paint. Plus the Peel Stop "whiteness" does not 100% hide everything like a regular white primer will.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product Hey guess what people. This product is not made to hide old paint color. It is made to glue down/seal old paint and nothing else. I have used this on several older homes and works every time. You must remove flaking paint first. The way I use it is scrap first, clean the surface, apply peel stop, apply a good primer, apply quality paint. None of the painted siding on the houses is peeling even after several years in the Oklahoma hot sun. First time I used it I did one area without peel stop and another with peel stop same primer and paint on both. Area with peel stop had a much better surface, smother and lot more vibrant.

I was super excited when I saw this product as I am trying to hide the grain in my oak kitchen cabinets. I thought a thick primer would help diminish the grain before painting. I tried to apply the product with a roller, but it was so thick the roller just pushed the primer around on the surface and left a mess. Seemed better to try and brush it on. I put it on thick and went over it twice as recommended on the can. But then as it dried the brush marks became very apparent. No big deal, it's primer, I'll give it a little sand and it'll be good to go! Not so much... it dries like rubber and is not sandable at all. So now instead of hiding the grain I'm trying to figure out how to hide brush horrible stroke marks! I wish I not seen this product on the shelves as I've got some very ruined cabinets now.... :(

Had been covered by vinyl since late 1970's. The vinyl, as is to be expected, trapped moisture and contributed to paint and wood deterioration. I didn't want to go the expense or labor to replace the wood. So, I turned to this to see if it'd help me "restore" the ceiling. While not perfect it was the best solution for my project. See photos. I'd think that on flat (not overhead) surfaces your could use a squeegee to fill and smoother rough, uneven surfaces. But there is some shrinkage as it dries and seals the underlying paint/substrate. I also applied some to a couple of places on the concrete caps at the weather end of the porch wall where years of layers of paint that was flaking made for a super ugly and rough surface. Again, not perfect but it worked for me. Did some smoothing and stopped the peeling and flaking.

This product works exactly as advertised “seals cracked, weathered, and peeling surfaces, creating a smoother, more uniform surface for finishing.“ I am very pleased with this product. This product is 50% transparent white. Its like a thin wood glue or a very thick primer. It doesn’t go over white, but transparent. After it drys, it hardens very well and glues the old paint, fills in cracks and I think it even strengthens or hardens the wood/siding. My situation is very worn and cracked plywood panel siding along with same condition cedar trim. Lots of cracks, old paint is peeling off etc… the siding even flexes a little between studs 16 inch apart. First I power washed the surface carefully. Only trying to remove loose paint, cleaning the surface and making sure I don’t damage the wood. I let it dry overnight, next day I caulked between trim and siding, day after I started painting with this primer. Few hours later I went over a second coat on very worn surfaces. Day later I pained with a high quality paint and even gave a second coat on areas that still showed weathered surfaces. The end product was amazing. Weathered surfaces reduced by 80%. Siding is stronger than before and doesn’t flex. Its been over 3 months and the paint is holding well (unlike the 1 star rating review). Will update after a year or two later.
