Questions & Answers

Will this cover a mix of mildew and spray paint odors? Can it be used as a topcoat?

We tried to cover the mildew smell of a dresser w spray paint and now it just smells like mist and chemicals.
Asked by: Jo
It is not a mildew primer but it kills almost any stains. It is alcohol based and very high in v.o.c.s. It is not a topcoat. A better bet might be another Zinsser product called 1-2-3 .Water -based and much easier to use and low odor.

Do I need to scuff paneling before applying?

Asked by: Gmo
Our Zinsser BIN Shellac-Based Primer provides excellent adhesion to even glossy surfaces without sanding. The surface should be cleaned and allowed to dry prior to the application.

How long after using primer/B-I-N can I wait to paint over it with regular paint? The reason I ask is because I'm painting the doors and trim inside a smoked in house, and there are quite a few to paint. I would rather get the odor/stain issue addressed by priming first, then applying a top coat. It might be a few weeks before I can prime all of the surfaces.
Asked by: Hannah
This dries very quickly. Depending on temperature and humidity, I did a 2nd coat in 45 minutes.

I have used BIN Primer on many projects over many years and the results have been great. I routinely use it to spot-prime knots on boards (pine or cedar) or to block tannin stains in old attic or basement framing or lumber that has been exposed for 100+ years and would eternally bleed tannin or dirt stains if not sealed. I also use it to seal water stains on ceilings and to block pigment bleed-through from previously painted surfaces with highly soluble pigments. I have never had a bleed-through problem where I’ve first primed with BIN Primer, whether interior or exterior work (although exterior has been limited to spot-priming knots with BIN). After spot-priming with BIN Primer I routinely prime the entire surface with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Base Primer and then apply the top coat of paint. Results have been consistently excellent. Much of the work I do ends up being painted white, thus stain blocking is critical. Note, however, that this alcohol-based primer is EXTREMELY thin and application takes practice. Using a brush to spot-prime ceilings is extremely drippy--most of the BIN may run down your arm before the brush touches the ceiling. A small (3” or 4”) roller is better for spot-priming ceiling areas, and even that takes practice to avoid excessive dripping. Plan to discard your brush or roller after use. Clean-up with denatured alcohol is possible, but I generally use a disposable brush or roller. Be sure to protect floors and other surfaces against drips (BIN will quickly penetrate a porous drop cloth or newspaper that would protect against most paint drips). BIN dries very quickly, and it is extremely difficult to remove from surfaces after it dries. Despite the dripping and clean-up issues I would HIGHLY recommend this product for blocking stains. It can be difficult to apply to ceilings and it can be very messy, but it blocks stains exceptionally well when used according to instructions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solution for Problem Walls Original Zinsser B-I-N pigmented shellac stain-killing primer-sealer is a fantastic product. If you are painting previously wallpapered walls, it is ESSENTIAL to a good paint finish. Although this product has a high odor during application, it dries quickly (within minutes) and can be recoated in 45 minutes. In most cases, the room is ready to recoat by the time you are finished sealing, working in the same direction. B-I-N gives a diamond-hard finish that masks many small imperfections, and seals any residual adhesive, preventing the new paint surface from blistering and peeling. B-I-N can also be used to seal solid wallpaper or paper-coated paneling prior to painting with good success. I highly recommend this product!

Tried a water based primer on a prior roof leak stain in a bedroom. I had a can from a previous project. I knew better than that, but I didn't want to run to the store. Lesson learned. When you are lazy, you end up doing more work. Went and got this and 45 minutes later a 2nd coat was applied. This is very watery and needs to be shaken and/or stirred well for it to work properly. It does smell bad, but opening a window and placing a fan helps. I have never used this to prime a whole room of drywall. Only for bad stains that really look bad and need coverage in small areas. That being said, I buy disposable brushes and throw them out when done. So no messy clean up either.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Have the Can Shaken at the Store The primer has the consistency of milk. When I opened the can it was separated and required about ten minutes of stirring to get all the solids off the bottom and into suspension. The primer is still thin and prone to running. Being thin, it lays well for a smooth base. It is a tenacious primer, and very difficult to clean up once dry. I will use it again whenever putting a water-based paint over an existing oil-based finish.

It is a key component of my paint locker because it works on all projects. Covering stain, covering virgin wood, masonry...whatever. I thought it was silly to have a primer that was more costly than my paint. But now I know it makes perfect sense. This primer makes even the cheapest paints look like rock stars. I have never needed to apply a second color coat of paint since I started using this. TIPS: If working in a confined space, wear a respirator. Stir before using. The shellac can sometimes settle. Remember, the coat does not need to look perfect (I OCD and make mine perfect though)
