Questions & Answers

Can I used this on previously stained/finished wood trim? If so, do I need to sand it first? Can it be used as a final topcoat? Thanks!

Asked by: needafloor
You can use clear shellac over previously finished wood trim. And it can be used as a final top coat. In most cases you do not need to sand first but you may want to if the trim needs to be cleaned up. aware that shellac will not withstand water very well and it is not as durable as some other finishes. But it will look good in a place where it won't get wet or wear.

Does the clear contain wax.jacke

Asked by: JackW
Zinsser clear shellac contains a small amount of wax but not enough to be a problem. You hear a lot about using dewaxed shellac under other finishes. I've done a lot of reading and a lot of experimenting myself over several years and my opinion is that it's not necessary. I use clear shellac under paint, polyurethane and lacquer. If I am going to apply an oil finish I generally do not use shellac or I dilute the shellac with denatured alcohol first.

what is the curing temperature required?
Asked by: MarkToregossaLol
For optimal results, we recommend that the curing temperature for the Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac is between 50°-90°F. The relative humidity should be less than 85%. Cooler temperatures or higher humidity will delay the dry times with the coating. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

The surface can easily be sanded before you paint, which helps for a smooth finish. And you use less paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to apply and fast drying. Many coats a day a plus. Have used this Shellac on several projects in the past and like the fast drying time and protection it gives the wood. The fact that it dries clear is a plus too, especially when working with fancy wood grains. The wood tones really come through great.

I purchased this shellac to finish and protect tool handles such as handsaws and planes. I applied 3 coats which appears to provide good protection for the handles. I was instructed at HD to use paint thinner for cleanup but paint thinner is definitely not the correct cleanup product because it simply jelled and gummed up the shellac on my applicator. I'm sure glad I didn't purchase the $13 natural bristle brush since I had to discard my applicator after the first use. Each additional cost seemed to melt into previous coats. This shellac dries extremely fast, especially the first coats allowing the application of additional costs quickly. This shellac did a nice job on my tool handles and would likely be a good finish for larger items.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Your standard shellac Shellac is amazing stuff. An all-natural finish that can provide anything from a high gloss to a matte finish, depending on how you rub it out. The classic choice for hundreds of years of fine furniture and instrument making. Zinsser is the only brand you can get off the shelf nowadays. Otherwise, you have to order from specialty houses online, and make your own cut from lac flakes and denatured alcohol. Zinsser is perfectly good, with this clear shellac only adding a slight yellowing to your finished product. Work quickly, apply several coats, and rub out, and you can obtain a lovely finish to last several lifetimes (as long as it stays indoors and you don't spill your booze on it).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SHELLAC TRADITIONAL FINISH AND SEALER I like this product to put on rustic old boxes, tables etc. It gives it a nice look like it has not had anything done to it. Makes it look very nice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best finishing product for doors an cabinetry in home use I find that applying shellac in very light applications makes the wood come to life it gives it a beautiful sheen and it dries extremely fast. I use a soft cloth and it becomes a child's play.(USE disposable gloves i.e. latex) then when it is well dry use a very fine steel wool to lightly smooth the few asperities. I usually apply twice and it does the job. I find Shellac a better product because 1) the vapors are very minimal as compared with other products. I do not know if it would be good for floors, bu for finishing vertical doors and inside of cabinetry it is F A N T A S T I C

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 Gal Shellac After successfully testing the "shellac the flooring under-layment" to seal in odors, etc., we began applying the shellac in earnest. To apply the shellac, we used the Wagner Roller system connected to the five gallon containers. Worked superbly and made the job of shellacing the flooring under-layment of a five bedroom house manageable. This Zinsser product is outstanding, as have been other Zinsser products that I have used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Need a quick and easy finish shellac is the way to go! I have used shellac for many years. It is a great sealer of raw wood. Apply a thinned down coat to the wood and it will be dry and ready for sanding within 30 minutes. You can apply more coats or change to wipe on poly for a great and durable finish. Don't forget the denatured alcohol to clean your brushes. If you see a drip after apply the finish you can rub it out with the alcohol. Can't do this with polyurethane.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solution for latex paint woes We painted a wooden desk with black latex paint and we got the inevitable blocking that caused the paint to remain sticky and feeling like it never dried. I added two coats of the shellac and problem was gone. Rock solid semi clear finish and it is dry as can be. Nothing sticks at all anymore and it can even be wiped down with a damp cloth. I highly recommend this product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Moving to natural finishes I'm trying to move toward natural material for my projects. I was impressed with the Shellac, I likely needed to cut the product to help minimize the brush strokes on the project. I used 2 coats and then finished it was paste wax. I was surprised at how well the finish came out. The product was dry within 1 hour of applying and made quick work of the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 1 Gal Shellac The 1 Gal size allowed for experimentation without opening the much larger 5 Gal container. We simply applied with a brush, during this experimentation phase. The Shellac worked as we had planned and sealed the floor under-layment for the carpet very well and sealed out the previous odors from the old carpet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love working with Shellac We installed beadboard and wanted a natural look but finding a product that didn't have an offensive odor or off-gassing was proving difficult until we found that SHELLAC was available. The smell reminds me of glazed donuts. An added bonus is that we can paint over it if we decide to in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sealer-Fast Drying Used this as a sealer thinning it 3 parts alcohol to 1 part shellac. Worked great on my 100 year old southern pine floors. Dries fast and allows follow-up sanding and application of ureathane in the same day. Also works great with preventing the floor from staining when using trowelable fillers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product Sometimes hard to find, but Shellac is a great product to "seal" a surface. I usually apply one coat, let dry (30-60 min seems OK), lightly sand with steel wool, and apply another coat. Now surface is sealed and smooth. Sometimes I use finished product now, or sometimes I add a coat of varnish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blocked the bleed! Was trying to paint a wood table with white paint. Spots were bleeding through. Saw online that using shellac under the white paint should prevent bleeding. Even though I had used a primer, I was still getting bleeding. Used two thin coats of shellac and then two coats of paint. Looks great.
