Asked by: VTCC75
Using soap and water usually removes the dried product. If that doesn’t work, reapply this product to reactivate it will allow for easy removal of the dried product from the surface.

Happy to help, Lexie! Rust-Oleum Zinsser DIF Gel Wallpaper Stripper is intended for use on with wallpapered surfaces. How do I get rid of the smell of dif?

Asked by: Melissa
Melissa, ventilation is definitely key for getting rid of the odor. If you have not tried putting new wallpaper up, you could wash the surface with a mild detergent such as dish soap and water to help.

Customer Reviews

32 oz. DIF Gel Wallpaper Stripper Spray is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked well for our powder room We are gutting a powder room (1/2 bath), which included stripping 22 year old wallpaper from previous owners. The DIF gel works wonders if you follow the instructions to a T. Some tips: score, score, and score some more. Like the instructions say, the more holes the better. Do not leave a 1" square area unscored, or that area will stay stuck. Work in small sections. Wet down your section with the spray (yes your arm will quickly tire of squeezing the handle), set a timer for 15 minutes, and go back to peel it down. We didn't even really need the scraper tool...maybe just to get it started in some areas. DO NOT wait more than 15 minutes! This is NOT a product where the longer you wait the better it is. There is a "sweet spot" where the backing of the wallpaper is wet and ready to almost fall off...but wait too long and it becomes uber sticky again. This is why working in small sections is helpful. One downside is you will use quite a bit of this stuff, but if you are DIY a small area it's a pretty darn good solution. We used about a gallon for our powder room.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Use the concentrate in the white bottle I have removed a lot of wallpaper over the years. I've always used DIF concentrate in the white bottle. Although it's never a picnic, that stuff gets the job done. This time I only had a wallpaper border in a small room to remove so I thought the ready-to-use spray gel would be just the thing. The vinyl top to the border came off without any remover at all. I perforated the strips of backing/paste and sprayed the gel as directed. At first I only left 15 minutes for it to work. That wasn't right. Then I left 30 minutes, it had already started to dry out. Even after the paper was rubbed, and scrubbed off (much elbow grease), it was not capable of removing the paste alone. It leaves behind quite a soapy residue and blue spots on your white ceiling and trim. Use the clear stuff in the white bottle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful stuff! I've used this before, and have a job to remove some ancient wallpaper from a hallway. I started by just stripping the paper with a flat razor blade and it came off but I realized I'd need something to remove the paste. I tried spraying the DIF right on the next panel of old wall paper and what an amazing difference it made in removing the paper and the glue all in one step. It took me 1/10th the time to remove the stuff that I sprayed with DIF first. The stuff came off in nice long strips and was much easier on my arm, the blade went through like a hot knife through butter. I hate dealing with wall paper but this product sure makes it a lot easier. It doesn't have an obnoxious odor -- I'm very sensitive to smells.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Still hard work The spray bottle sprayer doesn't work- so I pour it into a Tupperware and brush it on the wall. You have to literally glob it on to make a difference. It either hasn't soaked in to work on the glue, or it dries out. I have been doing very small sections at a time (to try to avoid it drying out) and keep having to re-apply just to get little pieces off. And I am scoring the wall a lot before applying. Then still have to re apply and scrape at least 2 more times to get the glue off and it gets really messy at this point. This is my first time removing wallpaper, and I am going to be trying a different product- not happy with this one at all.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not the best Was using another product (WP Chomp) to remove wallpaper and ran out. After reading various forums that recommended this product so I bought it. Goes on thick and doesn't run and was able to spread it about using a blade. It did remove the paper ok but since I didn't use one of those "paper tigers" it was not quick and easy like the other product. If you use the "paper tiger" device, I would recommend this/if not then I wouldn't.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like a charm!!! If you follow the instructions, this stuff works wonders!!! No scoring or scraping necessary. I don't understand some of the other reviews. We had absolutely no issues at all using this product. Highly recommend and can't wait to use this on my next project.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the trick - after some tricks To make DIF work the best, you have to use one of those wallpaper scorers and really go to town on the paper. Use good pressure when scoring for best results. Then, you need to soak the wallpaper with the Dif gel (I learned that spreading it with a brush doesn't work as well as it dries out too quickly) and let it sit at least 20 minutes. Then, start from a corner and peel down. It should come off beautifully. If there's any remaining glue on the wall, you can remove it with water and not have to waste the Dif gel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product After using water and scraper I needed to get this job done. I checked out reviews on this product most were ok so I bought. I wasted a lot of time not using this product. Follow the instructions and it works wonders. Try to scrape off top layer of wallpaper then spray this on wait 15 mins, you can almost use a rag to wipe the rest off no more scraping..no more glue......just one more hint if you are doing a big job buy a couple of bottles you would hate to run out.
