Can this be used on unfinished wood to get a white wash effect?
Asked by: Painter
Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer and Sealer can be used on unfinished wood. one thing to keep in mind is that water-based finishes can sometimes call grain raise so you may need to lightly sand after applying the primer and apply another thin coat. We hope this helps!

I don't see why it could be used on any surface that's porous enough to have it adhere.

Have used over and over to prime both latex AND oil-painted surfaces - drywall, door trim, baseboard, cabinetry. No need to sand first, even if it's a glossy oil-painted surface. Great job of covering dark colors and stains, too. You can put latex, oil or alkyd paints on top of it, no problem at all. It's thick -- so stir well before using. If it's too thick to roll smoothly, add a little water. I use a mini roller on door trim for fast coverage, then tip off with a brush so no roller stippling remains. Dries fast -- about an hour. Then you can paint. WALLPAPER REMOVAL If you're removing wallpaper -- once you've got the paper off, roll on a coat of Zinsser Gardz to lock down any remaining wallpaper glue so it won't reactivate when it comes into contact with water-based paint. Gardz is VERY runny and VERY hard to get off floors once it dries, so cover floors first. You do NOT want to spill that stuff and let it dry. THEN -- throw a coat of Bullseye 123 on top of the Gardz coat and you're back in business.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tried Zinsser Bulls Eye primer after talking to a contractor... Tried Zinsser Bulls Eye primer after talking to a contractor friend of mine that swears by it. I have been using Kilz Premium for years but wanted to give Zinsser a try. The Zinsser is thinner than I am used to so it did not fill and hold in cracks as well, but the thinner consistancy may mean that it soaks in to bare wood deeper and provides longer durability? I will know the answer to that in years to come when I compare the Zinsser primed areas to the Kilz primed areas that I painted this year. I have a 100+ year old painted lady house that I paint in sections (sides, peaks, porch, garage) and I do a section every year so it always looks nice and neat and is manageable by myself. With this system I repaint everything every 8 years. Application was smooth and coverage was good. The Kilz seems stickier and takes slightly more effort to spread with a brush. I use a brush on my painting and my contractor friend sprays his on so that may be why he likes the Zinsser better too? thinner paint works better in spray applications so that is something to consider too. It will be interesting to see how the two brands compare in years to come. I only gave Zinsser a "Good" rating because of the thinner consistancy not filling and holding in as many cracks as Kilz, and I seemed to have more caulking to do after priming. Both brands have their own advantages and depending on your needs I think both are excellent products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Cover even for Grout, Aluminum and Tile This is simply amazing stuff! As I never could stand the brown colors in the 1" ceramic tiles on my bathroom floors, hate grout in general, couldn't afford to have this removed & replaced with vinyl, my project concept was to paint over it all with white epoxy paint and add tiny chips of blue and black to the finished product. The Home Depot people are FABULOUS and recommended this amazing latex no-fume primer which was very user friendly with both brush and roller. As there was much discoloration on some white vinyl and on the aluminum uprights of my shower doors, I used it on these, too! TERRIFIC results. Next day did the Latex one-step epoxy paint treatment and added the tiny chips...looks incredible and brand new. Like we have a white granite floor! I have several other fix-it uses planned for this. It's my new cover-it-up for anything "best friend" :-)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Crappy primer I wished I had read reviews before I purchased this. It covers unevenly when using a paint brush or roller. I edged with a brush, and if I went over that paint, it either removed it or it globbed. Using a roller, wherever I applied the roller first is where the heaviest paint went. Then rest of area painted was covered more lightly. Should be no reason to have to do 2 coats of primer because of a lousy product!

Building ornamental brackets/corbels for repair work to eaves on a large classical revival building in Portland, Maine I used a variety of woods, plywood, PT, knotty pine, mahogany, and had wood filler over nail holes, blemishes, etc. 123 make an even base for the semi-gloss top coat. High hide for a water based primer, low/no odor, dries fast, and, of course, soap and water clean up.

This seals stains better but penetrates the drywall stain through the paper and creates a bubble in the wall that you have to cut out prime and spackle and reprime. The Kilz goes over it but doesn’t seal out the discoloration as well. Tried both on my ratty garage from careless renters here before us.

The primer worked great, even though it took a while to apply. Once the primer was dry, it was much easier to apply the finish coat of paint as the primer/sealer closed the porous stone and helped in the final look we were looking for.
