Questions & Answers

I need a primer for my front porch. The paint is peeling. Do I need to sand it first?

Asked by: Lorene5
Yes always it's better to sand and clean before applying for best results

Is this stain blocking primer? Can it be used iver new plaster?

Asked by: Kristen
yes, I've used it on plaster, joint compound, plaster of paris, and spackling. It took multiple coats to block creosote stains from a chimney and water stains from ice damage that had the wood resins. Nothing beats alcohol based Bin for stain blocking, but, is a hassle to use, particularly overhead.

Can this be used to cover a water stain on the ceiling?

I have two small children and the odor of the shellac based primer has too strong a smell.
Asked by: Chris
I wouldn't bet on 1-2-3 eliminating water stains. The smell of solvent or shellac based primers will dissipate in about an hour with a fan on and air circulating

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rehabbed an old masonry house that required a lot of... Rehabbed an old masonry house that required a lot of skim coating over spider cracked walls and layers of glossy paints, plaster repair, and also a lot of new drywall. Prep was meticulous, including dust removal and careful wiping. I used the tip per the instructions. I thought this primer might be a “one fits all” solution, considering all of the varying situations, but it ran and sagged badly on the skim coated walls, requiring 2 full evenings of wet sanding to mitigate. Also, the new drywall had a very rough texture wherever there was bare paper and also needed additional sanding. All-in-all, could not have done a worse job. I would have been disappointed even if I didn’t cost almost $300.00 for 15 gallons. Maybe the oil-based was the way to go...?One more thing, the previous occupants spray painted words on the walls and the red paint bleed right through the primer in some places. The MINIMUM requirement for a primer is to stop bleed-through. Will try Kilz on those spots before painting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for new drywall! I needed to prime my recently finished basement and had no idea which primer would be best. I researched for hours since I'm a newbie and came to find this primer. I only used a single coat and it covers 95% of the mud/seams, looks like its almost the final paint job. What I really liked was how it was dry to the touch in 30 minutes. If you read this review...stop researching other primers and BUY THIS ONE! My only issue was the second 5-gallon bucket we opened was a lot runnier that the first one. It wasn't too bad, but you could definitely tell a difference.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 123 Primer I have used this product on my job sites for several years now and it is the best buy for the money. I have used other top brand named paints, but for a water based product it can't be beet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best latex primer! I had used Binz and Kilz when i was young and dumb and 'that's what everyone uses' Until I ran into a house with really dark window frames and doors which were to be painted bright white. 5 coats of kilz and it appeared i'd need 5 more so I went to Home Depot and tried some Bullseye 1,2,3.. ONE coat finished that room, the rest of the rooms i did use 2 coats but it sure beats 5+! I have since used this product whenever i need a primer. interior, exterior.. you name it. blackened ceilings, porches (under a good porch and deck paint)... metal, fresh drywall.. It's thicker then kilz or binz so it doesn't drip all over or spatter so much especially when doing ceilings. Most things, one coat is plenty!

I applied some leftover of that brand of primer over some of my exterior cosmetic 6 column type plywood siding where there is blistering from hot sunlight during the afternoons. I left the primer uncovered with my remaining color paint to test its durability against the hot summer sunlight on one side of my house and possibly another one as well. it is a test to see if it can stop the blistering any further. maybe it wont last long, but I think there is an need for a primer that can withstand hot afternoon sunlight on one side or two of any house. I don't see as much blistering on the shady sidings of my house. it is hot in California unless you live in San Francisco , that is..........mildew/mold resistant film helps during wintertime, alright. I need to know a good primer that can block hot sunlight to help my expensive $55 a four by nine board plywood siding last really long! This brand seems to be doing the job, the verdict is not yet in...............

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very tenacious primer I use this primer extensively and have been very happy with it. It covers well, applies easily, and aggressively grips a variety of surfaces. The ability to apply a final coat over it in a short time is also a big plus. I'm less enthused about the 2-gallon container. It is cheaper to buy this way but I use aftermarket plastic lids and/or pouring spouts on my one and five gallon paint cans. These are not available for the two-gallon size so I had to transfer this primer to one gallon cans: a nuisance. But, overall, an excellent product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent adhesion and coverage! Three years ago I found a partially used can of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer after our handyman finished our bathroom reno. My lucky day! I used it on woodwork around the house then painted with a just one coat of a bright white semi-gloss Behr paint. After getting exceptionally good results I bought another can and had it tinted yellow to match my huge sideboard paint. My only complaint is that the tint was 2 shades darker than the enamel I got for the sideboard. Not a big issue but from now on I'll have it tinted 2 shades lighter! This Zinsser water based primer bonds so well with ANY surface that I recommend wearing gloves. Be sure to clean up spills immediately with hot water and dish detergent or vinegar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great over oil I used probably 30 gallons to cover over a 40yr old dark oil stain, and 40yr old beige oil paint. It worked great to encapsulate, cover, and established a great base for latex paints. 2 years later it still looks great with no signs of separation. There are few choices for a primer to cover oil so I was glad to find it in the 2gal size as it's so much cheaper that way. Many of the paints are paint & primer but they're not designed to cover oil. It's very thick stuff but it went fine through a professional sprayer. One coat was enough to conceal the color. For rough shingles I needed two coats just to get all the nooks & crannies and some cedar bleed-through. It's very helpful to get it tinted so you aren't trying to cover up extra white spots on shingles. However, the 1 gal can is too full to tint. You have to get the paint people to remove some of the paint which I convinced some Ace employees to do, but Home Depot wouldn't. They can't dispose of the paint so I had to buy a container to take it home. I seem to recall this isn't an issue in the 2 & 5 gal container but I can't remember now.

I used Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer on OSB, chip board, in my two garages with no preparation on the OSB other than wiping it down with a damp cloth. It stuck unless I abused it, then it came off in short strips leaving no residue. It took several coats to cover the stained wood chips and seal them in. It did not stop black magic marker marks, even after 5-6 coats and 3-4 coats of latex primer. They eventually turn pinkish, but still show. Warning- don't use magic marker where you will be painting. I will try oil based KILZ next to cover the markers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zinsser/Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water Based Interior/Exterior Primer and Sealer (White) Two coats are required for cover of stained wood to prevent bleed through and two coats are necessary for complete coverage on new wood. I haven't tried it on concrete block wall, yet. I have some oil based paint I've been using for that. The directions include surfaces the 1-2-3 may be used on and it includes concrete and steel. I have some new wood coated and still without top coat that is in excellent condition after two years of harsh winters and hot summers. It's a very thick paint and should be diluted with Floetrol. The 2 gallon pale gives a small price break over two 1 gallon containers. My opinion: Best water based primer I've ever used, to my recall.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very thin I see where this would be good for an airless sprayer but it was so thin it would barely stay on the brush..Took 2 coats and even then didnt cover a light blue ceiling very well...I took my time and constantly checked for runs and got through it but I would not recommend this primer for brush and roller...O e good thing about it, it lays down thin so no roller marks... I may try it in my sprayer when I paint my pole barn

Additionally, I have shopped every supplier and HD has the best price; especially the 2-gallon bucket. I find this primer to be an excellent value for my business.

I really needed a gray primer to cover a very dark blue but the store didn't have it in stock when I went so I went with white. Use gray to cover dark color! That said, a 2 gallon bucket of this white primer did the trick. It's thin, not thick so don't make the mistake of trying to use heavy coats. It will slide right off. The room: dark blue on one wall. The other walls were yellow over the blue but the paint was coming off in strips. Then I had drywall repair that needed to be sealed. This is a multi use primer. Follow directions and your project will come out the right way. The whole 2 gallons were used in this room. Ceiling to floor and trim. Yes the trim was blue too. It smells bad so ventilate! I saved time and money using the 2 gallon bucket. I highly recommend this sealer/primer for all the issues I stated.
