Answer

Thanks for the reach, Brad! While the Rust-Oleum Zinsser Perma-White is an excellent choice for areas of high humidity, you may want to use a primer underneath to help with the water stain. Consider, Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Interior/Exterior Primer for your primer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Cover-Stain-1-qt-White-Oil-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-3504/100398403 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Answer

Good question! The reason online products are sold by the case is for shipping purposes. In many instances, including this one with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Perma-White Mold & Mildew-Proof Paint, items must be shipped by case quantities. For this reason, when purchasing items online, they must be purchased in this way. For individual cans, we recommend visiting your local Home Depot store to see if they have the product in stock. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

This mildew proof paint works but it's NOT cheap....
Much as I hate to admit it this Zinsser mildew proof paint is about as good as you will get especially for high humidity rooms such as bathrooms, showers, and basements. You do have to purchase huge amounts of this type paint and pricing is what I was overly concerned with but after using my completed bathroom (see all pictures for proof) you can clearly see that the paint has held up perfectly with neither blistering nor mold/mildew rearing it's ugly head. If you want a quality mildew proof paint this is the one to get!

TERRIBLE! POOR ADHESION OVER EXISTING PAINT! FIND ANOTHER PRODUCT!
I'm not a professional painter, and I'm not an endorser of any paint manufacturer, product or anything like that. I'm an average Joe that needs to paint a relatively small bathroom ceiling where I recently added LED ceiling lights and my wife now would like the ceiling color changed as well. I chose this paint since it says that it is great for mold/mildew areas such as bathrooms, and I wanted to use what appeared to be a great product for the job (I don't want to be doing this again anytime soon). To note, I don't have prior history of mold or mildew in this bathroom. The existing ceiling paint (Glidden satin, approx 3 years old) held up very well. I began by reading the instructions and the label says the paint can be applied over existing painted surfaces as long as it is cleaned and sound. This paint does not need primer. I cleaned the entire ceiling with a household cleaner to remove any grime, then I sanded it lightly using a piece of sandpaper over a drywall sanding block. I wiped the ceiling down using a damp cloth & water to take off the dust and came back to paint a couple days later. I began painting by cutting in the ceiling at the walls and noticed this paint was not adhering to the existing finish very well. The problem occurs when I overlap some strokes - the brush pulls away areas the first strokes just put down. I know I shouldn't "over tool" the paint when applying by brush, but this is ridiculous. I got very frustrated, so I decided to stop and read the instructions again, check the internet, and clean the ceiling once more. Well, it still occurred and I'm beyond my limits of dealing with it. I didn't get to use the roller yet, but I'm worried what condition the ceiling will be left in after those overlapping movements. I've never experienced such terrible performance, and I've used a lot of different brands over the years. In my opinion, this is a very tricky paint to use over a sound existing finish. I'll be getting another brand - something that I've used before and know works well.

HORRIBLE PAINT!!!!
DRIPPY!!!!!!! THIN!!!!!! 3 OR MORE COATS NEEDED!!!!!!!! SO FRUSTRATED!!!!!!
by Rene
Response from Rust-OleumSupportMar 5, 2021
That is very unusual to hear, Rene! Our Zinsser Perma-White Mold & Mildew-Proof Interior Paint does require two coats for proper performance as well as mold & mildew-proof resistance, however, three or more coats should not be necessary for proper hide and coverage. Please give us a call at 800-901-0411, we want to get to the bottom of this and make things right! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum
Does not stick to well existing paint
The paint does not adhere well to existing paint on wall and when overlapping the edges, it pulls the paint off.

Response from Rust-OleumSupportMar 1, 2021
Hmm, something's amiss here. The Rust-Oleum Zinsser Perma-White Mold & Mildew-Proof Paint should be applied to a surface that's clean, dry, and sound. A few things to keep in mind that will help with your application. You're only as strong as your first coat. This means that if your first coat of paint is flaking/peeling, we would recommend sanding. Additionally, the product should be applied to a surface that's been cleaned properly. TSP should not be used because it can leave a film behind that will cause an issue with the adhesion of the product. The product also will take 7-10 days to fully bond to the surface. This means that if you were to try to scratch at it too early, it will not be bonded properly. We hope this helps! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1 Rustoleum

Something is amiss here, William. Our Rust-Oleum Zinsser Perma-White Mold & Mildew-Proof Interior Paint will protect interior surfaces while preventing mold & mildew growth on the paint film. Keep in mind that all existing mold and mildew must be removed prior to application. Two coats are required for proper performance and mold & mildew-proof resistance.

Poor coverage
I have used this paint for around 20 years. In the last 5 years they have fundamentally changed the formula. This paint used to cover any base color with easy in one coat. It went on sticky and thick and made a sucking sound as it was rolled on. The current version of this paint is almost transparent. This is no longer a one coat paint, it is two coats at best and typically takes 3 coats to effectively cover what one coat used to accomplish. For this reason I have now switched brands as I cannot afford to paint a room three times that only should just need to be painted once. Dont be fooled by its old reputation, it is a far cry from what it once was.

We appreciate the feedback. Rust-Oleum Zinsser Perma-White Mold & Mildew-Proof Interior Paint is no thinner than other water-based latex paints. It sounds like there may have been some settling of the solids to the bottom of the can, which can occur as the product sits over time. Prior to applying, the paint must be stirred thoroughly, taking care to scrape the sides and bottom of the can to ensure even mixing. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

Now sure how anyone could give this paint a positive review. Extremely thin and watery paint. If you enjoy chasing drips and painting twice to get decent coverage, this is the paint for you.

Response from Rust-OleumSupportOct 20, 2020
That's not what we expect to hear Jim! To ensure the best results, Rust-Oleum Zinsser Perma-White Interior Mold and Mildew Proof Paint must be thoroughly stirred before each use and often during your application. Care needs to be taken to scrape the sides and bottom of the can, so that there is no settled pigment.

Something is amiss here! For the best results with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Perma-White Interior Paint, make sure to apply with a synthetic (nylon, polyester, or blend) bristle brush, roller, pad applicator, or airless sprayer. Long, smooth strokes will yield a better finish as opposed to overbrushing. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum
