Used for thermal expansion protection in residential applications
Features a stainless steel connection to resist corrosion
Field adjustable pre-charge allows for easy maintenance
Product Details
The 4.8 gallon XT-18 Thermal Expansion Tank is utilized on potable water lines between the backflow preventer or pressure reducing valve and the water heater for protection against water thermal expansion in residential applications. As the system pressure increases, water enters the polypropylene-lined water chamber of the tank, expanding a diaphragm into a pre-charged air chamber to keep the system pressure below the relief valve setting. Materials include a carbon steel shell with an epoxy finished coating, and corrosion-resistant stainless steel connection with a polypropylene liner and Butyl rubber diaphragm.
Pre-charge is field adjustable for convenient maintenance
Carbon steel shell with polypropylene liner ensures long-lasting construction
Diaphragm style tank is ideal for thermal expansion protection in residential applications
Stainless steel connection resists corrosion
Low-lead law compliant

A:Â The XT-18 tank capacity is 4.8 gal or 18 Liters. The XT-18 can handle up to a 175 gal water heater capacity at 130 deg F. The manufacturer recommends installation of the XT upstream of the water heater(s) on the cold water line.

A:Â The tank has a bladder in it & the bladder's air pressure is supposed to be set to one's normal water pressure. If one's water pressure raises, some water enters the tank and compresses the bladder. Zurn-Wilkins specifications for the

Solves thermal expansion pressure problems & is code required. I once lived in a community where the simple water system consisted of a water tank on the top of a hill. If one was near the top of the hill, a pump was required to take a decent shower; if one was at the bottom of the hill, like me, the line pressure varied from 150 to 180 psi depending on how deep the water was in the tank. Modern plumbing systems are designed for 40-60 psi, so every body at the bottom of the hill had pressure regulators. Pressure regulators are also check valves - water can't flow back thru them. So if everybody takes a hot shower in the morning & heads off to work & school, the water heater heats cold water, expanding it & completely defeating the pressure regulators purpose. This thermal expansion tank solves that problem. It has a bladder in it that fails eventually, but my experience with the Zurn-Wilkins is that they last a long time & I'm a happy user.
