Smart thermostat that approaches temperature management in a non-standard way
After reviewing the 2020 smart thermostat options it looks like the ecobee 3 Lite would be the best option. So far the three I installed are working as expected but I am still getting to know them. Replacing three perfectly capable but not smart Honeywell models was straightforward. In fact installation was not difficult requiring only concentration and the patience to manipulate the fiddly little wires. The thermostat comes with good, clear instructions.

Simple and straightforward
I’ve had this product for about a month and have found it very easy to use. The app interface is clean and identical to the thermostat itself.

I've have this product for a week now and it has been so convenient, reliable, exceptional! Our son does HVAC and he gave it to us as a gift what a wonderful gift. He did the installation as well. He highly recommends it

Simple installation
Installation from start to finish in under 30 min, including programming. Installed on a high voltage line for electric baseboard heat with a 240V to 24V transformer. Works like a charm!

I have three zones in the house (one on each floor) and unfortunately one thermostat can’t control all the zones, so I needed three thermostats and I decided to get two of the Ecobee3 lite thermostats and one Ecobee4 thermostat. Most of the basic features are the same between the two models though. Included with the thermostat is the wiring backplate, power extender kit (PEK), installation screws/anchors, installation guide, wire labels, and trim plate. No room sensors are included. The installation guide is actually very clearly written and easily understandable, making the actual installation easy to do. The installation manual only gives a brief (and I mean very brief) overview of the thermostats features. Luckily, there is a good user manual for the Ecobee3 (which is essentially the same as the lite) on Ecobee’s website that gives a good breakdown of the thermostats features and settings. Oddly, there is no online user manual for the 4, other than several support articles. The biggest difference between the 3 (which appears to be discontinued as it is no longer listed as a product on the Ecobee site other than in the support section) and 3 lite is the 3 has the ability to control other things such as dehumidifiers and ventilators with the 3 including a room sensor. The 4 has a room sensor and the ability to control dehumidifiers and the like, so if you have a system that includes those extra devices, then the 4 might be the better option. The 3 lite now has the ability to use sensors though, like the 3 and 4. Installation is pretty easy and took me about 20 to 30 minutes per thermostat. Once powered on, the Ecobee walks you through the initial setup and like the install is pretty easy. Although they aren’t included with the 3 lite thermostats, I plan to add some room sensors to the thermostats at a later date. I do think the added sensors are also a bit pricy though. I read the online manual for the Echobee 3 but also explored the different settings prior to do that as well to get familiar with the thermostat and the app as well. For the most part, it is fairly easy to understand and logically organized. I did have to look up some specific things, such as how to connect to my google home speaker (it can also be connected to Alexa device as well), which can control each of the thermostats and how to set up specific settings such as the reminders and sleep settings, which the initial setup doesn’t take you through. I tried to connect this to my Honeywell Z-wave system, but it doesn’t look like it is compatible. The thermostat looks cool on the wall. The touch screen is very responsive, with my only complaint being some of the icons and the keyboard being a bit smaller than I would like, making them difficult to hit correctly if you have large hands. The various menu options allow you to change the temperature, view the current forecast, set schedules and adjust different settings. I set my thermostats to automatically switch between heat and cool, which to me is beneficial for those times of the year that are in between the seasons. You can set to either heat or cool or turn off as well if you so choose. One small thing is that when I set the reminder about changing the filters, I get an email saying that I last changed the filter in 2014, even though I set it to Feb 2018 as the last filter change. I assume that is just a small bug because it defaults to 2014, when you first enable the reminder setting. I don’t think it should send that email until after you adjust the date setting for the last filter change and save it, but the reminders page seems to lack a save feature though. An added save feature might solve that bug in the reminder area as that would only activate the reminder after hitting save would be an easy fix for that. The display is not overly bright and dims when not in use, automatically brightening when you walk near it. One thermostat (the 4) is in my bedroom and I didn’t notice it all when I was trying to sleep. The display is easy to read, even from across the room. One thing I do wish this had was a learning feature like the Nest. I like the room sensor idea but without those sensors, it really should have the added ability to learn. It is programmable though and has pre-programmed settings for sleep, home and away along with geofence capabilities. I do think the schedule programming could be a bit easier and more feature rich than it is. The Ecobee app is pretty similar in look and feel to the thermostats and online web portal, making navigation simpler to learn and use. I do wish they would allow you to add user logins for other individuals in the home instead of having to use the same login for each app user. So far, I have had no network or connection issues with my Netgear router and extender that I use, but that may depend on your network setup and range of your router. The one thing that I think is an issue with these thermostats is the lack of a rechargeable battery backup or ability to put batteries into the thermostat. If the power goes down, then the thermostat has to reboot. I would prefer to at least have a AA battery slot for maintaining the thermostat in a low power state when the power goes out with the thermostat being able to send a signal to the app, letting you know that there is no power to your heating/AC system in the case of an emergency. Pros: Cool look Responsive, easy to see display Smart features Auto heat/cool feature Geofencing capability Energy savings capabilities Good, easy to use app Easy to understand installation instructions/easy to install Good online user manual Easy to setup and use (see cons) Works with Alexa, Google home Auto dim/auto detect feature Weather forecast feature Possible price rebates from power companies (depending on your location) Works with room sensors Good 3/5 year warranty Cons: Expensive (unless there are utility rebates available in your area) One thermostat may be needed for each zone No battery backup capability Some initial registration glitches Some icons and keyboard a bit small No learning features Scheduling could be a bit better No ability to add additional user login’s for app Wiring plate could be easier to install wires and lock them in place Ugly large trim plate Wall anchors aren’t great quality Wire labels fall off too easy during install Room sensors not included and a bit expensive No user manual included in package Doesn’t work for all types of systems and system devices Small bug in reminder settings Outer casing not as stylish as the metal ringed Nest Not Z-wave compatible I do think the thermostats are a bit expensive, but depending on your area, your local utility (like mine) might have a rebate for nearly half off, making these a pretty good deal for one of the coolest and smartest thermostats out there. 4 stars
