I was excited to receive this bell and install it on my property. It is solid in construction and produces a nice tone. The mechanism seems robust and should last for many many years. Here are some considerations: 1) There are no instructions in the box. I noticed online instructions on the product page but after the fact. This is just lazy on the part of the manufacture. I'm reading other comments and people are trying to install this on a wall when it's intended to go on a door! 2) The The rod may need to be cut depending on the thickness of your door. This means you need to cut the metal. I happened to have a grinding tool with a diamond edge cutting blade, so this was a piece of cake for me. A less equipped buyer might stumble here. The online instructions mention this but really don't offer guidance. 3) The rod is actually a bit vulnerable. I wasn't super careful and bent the rod a touch. I tried to bend it back but it felt like if I fussed too much I might snap it. To the rod is just a touch 'off' and so when I turn it, it's a bit stuff. I take the fault on this, and I hope it will get smoother over time. Learn from my mistake! 4) Another small but disappointing thing is that the screws are not black tipped. This is a trim piece and goes on the front door no less! These are standard metal screws that look rather ridiculous on a black finished product. Ill touch this up with some paint or sharpie. The devil is in the details!

This is one of the easiest door bells to install and it has that great sound of ringing brass from the bell.Install was easy, you need to drill five holes if you are installing in a metal door like me.One medium hole in the center for the shaft and 2 small ones for the bell and 2 for the switch.I drilled the center hole first so I could adjust the shaft,It was to long by 2 1/2 inches.once adjusted I drilled 4 pilot holes and basically assembled the two halves.Took about 5 minutes. What you get is a good looking well made door bell that has a sound that's unique and can be installed anywhere without the need of electricity.

A retro design from the Victorian/Craftsman era that needs no electrical wiring or batteries. The brass bell inside the door is activated by rotating a twist key outside. The tone is pleasant and clearly audible. Mechanical operation has some drawbacks. Installation requires drilling a hole through the door. Ring only from door of installation. The design is from another era; it is not obvious to some visitors that the key needs to be rotated to ring the bell. Returning visitors never forget; they love it. The internal mechanism has stamped gears, functional when new. Long term durability unknown. The cheerful tone elicits compliments and starts conversations. As the song says, everything old is new again.

This far exceeded my expectations. This is a beautiful reproduction of historical mechanical door bells. The bell makes a pleasant sound as the outside knob is turned, and has a very nice ringing when it stops turning. The unit looks great both on the outside and inside of the door. I'm sure older visitors will appreciate the nostalgia, and younger visitors will find it fascinating. There is no installation manual (which is why this isn't a 5-star review). But, to be fair, installation couldn't be easier and is quite intuitive to those mechanically inclined. Locate where you want the unit to be installed making sure it is on a solid surface. I mounted this on a wooden front door in the center. I would be a bit leery of installing it on any of the panels. Drill a 3/16" hole where the rod will pass through. Then drill at 13/32" hole on the outside deep enough the knob unit will fit flush. This could be drilled all the way through if desired. The rod was 1" longer than my door was thick, so I cut the end off so the bell unit would sit flush against the inside. Screw them into the door and you are done. I found that the bell unit sounded better if it was mounted with the pointed ends horizontal instead of vertical. Using it is easy ... turn the knob. No power needed except muscle power!

I am restoring a 1700's house. I put a brass door knocker on the front door; which looks and works great. I would put another on the back door, but depending on where I am in the house, it would be had to tell if the knock is at the front door or back. To differentiate, I got this for the back door (actually the storm door. It is mostly locked, and people can not access the interior door). Real simple design, nice clean sound and looks great (see pics). It came with no installation guide, but it was easy to install. I used a 5/32 bit for the rod and a 11/32 bit for the inset. It is snug, but I figure it will loosen with time. Only problem I envision, people are no longer use to these. I might need a 'Turn' plaque? Otherwise, they might not know what it is, do they turn it or pull it, and which way do they turn it (either way works) ... and end up knocking.

This works great! The rod was a bit too long for my door, but was easily cut with a $5 hacksaw.
