Hi David, thanks for reaching out. Boxwood can adapt to clay soil, but will absolutely struggle if the soil stays wet or is packed too tight, which is often the case. It is recommended that you dig a hole twice as wide and deep as the root ball of whatever you are planting and amend the area with topsoil so the roots have an opportunity to flourish and water can drain away. If you plan to landscape a large area, many gardeners will choose to amend the entire spot they plan to work in rather than spot treat an issue like heavy clay soil.
