Questions & Answers

Will it grow in clay soil
ByAug 7, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Hi David, thanks for reaching out. Boxwood can adapt to clay soil, but will absolutely struggle if the soil stays wet or is packed too tight, which is often the case. It is recommended that you dig a hole twice as wide and deep as the root ball of whatever you are planting and amend the area with topsoil so the roots have an opportunity to flourish and water can drain away. If you plan to landscape a large area, many gardeners will choose to amend the entire spot they plan to work in rather than spot treat an issue like heavy clay soil. Its well worth the effort in order for your trees, shrubs, and perennials to thrive. I hope you find this answer to be helpful!

                Answer This Question

Hi John, this plant is hardy in zones 5-9. Your current location is considered to be zone 10b by the USDA. You can try to use this plant in your garden, but I cannot guarantee that it will thrive/survive in the hot temperatures you have there in Punta Gorda. If you decide to try this plant out, I would recommend planting in an area that receives morning sun only, shielding it from harsh afternoon sun will help with the heat tolerance issue. Ensure you provide adequate moisture, but also have well draining soil - the roots will develop rot if there isn't enough airflow throughout the soil. I hope you find this information to be helpful!

The boxwood shrubs arrived 2 to a box, so half the UPS truck was mine! They were well packed to protect the plants and arrived in fantastic condition.

These little boxwoods arrived healthy and ready to plant. I planted them about a month and a half ago and I see that they have new growth on them now. Looking forward to having them fill in my semi native plant bed with a touch of evergreen.

Boxwoods arrived as described in about one week from ordering.
These boxwoods arrived in good condition and as described. Everything is green, the roots look good, no broken limbs. Two shrubs per box and each came in a black plastic 1gal, pot wrapped in plastic. Some of the potting media did shift around in shipping, but it was easy enough to put that back in the pot and repack the roots. Each plant is about 8 inches tall, not including the pot. I am leaving these in their pots for a few weeks to recuperate from shipping. Planning to plant in the ground in early Fall.

Damaged, Smaller and more Expensive than In-Store
I purchased this for a major backyard makeover and was trying to save a little money. The plants come 2 to a box. One is upside down and is supposed to be suspended with cardboard tabs. Almost all of the boxes arrived with the two plants smashed together. The tabs failed almost universally. So the already VERY small plants were further damaged and lost valuable foliage. Several of the bags enclosing the dirt had the zip ties loose enough that dirt was lost. We still planted all of the bushes immediately. After a small amount of shock where some foliage turned yellow and died off, they mostly survived the turmoil and are doing fine. However, I was upset to find the following week that the 1 gallon plants in store were about 50% larger and less money per plant. Overall, don't purchase your boxwoods like this... Lesson learned.
