Q:I have a Hydrotek 2520 and purchased the bhive 4 zone controller. Found out I needed another piece to install and looks like this relay is needed. Is there anything else I need to get to have a fully functioning unit?

A:  I don't own a bhive, but basically, this pump relay, has one purpose. Provides 120V to the pump, when it receives signals from the controller. The signal from the controller is 12V, typically I route it with the Pump//Common at the controller, it shall activate the 120V for the pump to works. I personally installed down the 120V line a GFCI exterior plug. This serves for the pump disconnect in case of shortings. Hope this helps

    Q:Installation instructions state it should be mounted 5 feet away from sprinkler controller, and sprinkler controller should be 12 feet away from pump. Can you explain why?

    A:  I would assume it's to ensure there is no interference, magnetic or electrical, between the relay and the devices or vice versa. My relay is about 4 ft from my Orbit b-hyve wireless controller and about 10 feet from the Goulds 2 hp pump. I haven't had any issues.

      A:  I cannot explain why? I installed mine right behind the controller and maybe a foot away from the pump and have not had any problems with it whatsoever, I must have missed that in the instructions or maybe I just didn't read them? I guess I'll have to do that in the future?

                  A:  It runs up to a 2 HP pump which uses about 13.5 amps at 230 volts.

                      A:  Do not operate the pump any more. An electrician should check for a short or defective relay.

                        A:  Possibly. But the first question that comes to mind is do you have it wired correctly? The two wires to the solenoid need to be powered by 24VAC from the controller. They cannot have any connection to the 120/240 VAC that powers the pump. So first step is to verify the wiring and making sure that the two solenoid wires do not have anything other than 24VAC on them. Ever. If that is correct, then yes, it is most likely a very faulty relay.
