A: It is styrofoam. I requested samples from manufacturer before buying.

A: Hello Ethan, there is no option to pick foam, plastic is the closest option and it is actually very close to foam molecular wise although people expect something hard when we say plastic. Great product though, very popular and wonderful to work with.

Answer This Question
A: Not much! There is about R 1 value on these but that is just an added bonus, these are decorative tiles. Sometimes people use them with thicker foam panels to add insulation.

Q:Could they be used "outside" in an open but protected from rain "alcove" type installation? We live in a year-round temperate but somewhat high humidity (Hawaii). Wood ceiling put up by builder looks pretty coarse.

Answer This Question
A: Hi David, the tiles could definitely be installed over coarse wood. It may be a good idea not to caulk the seams since there might already be humidity in the wood and if you seal with caulk it will be trapped. I have personally installed a ceiling for someone in Florida in their porch and it worked well.

Q:Can I actually nail these up? Going in a 3season room with beams...not a flat ceiling surface

Answer This Question
A: No, it can't be nailed. It's a glue-up.
by|Jul 29, 2019
A: No, this is not advisable. The tiles need a solid surface.
by|Jul 29, 2019
A: These appear to be same material as a Styrofoam cup therefore nailing would not be a secure way of installing these tiles.

Answer This Question
A: They can be painted with water based paints. Some people leave them as they are. So it depends on if you prefer the way they look vs painted look. I personally prefer the painted look.

A: They do not need to be painted if you like the color/texture which is the same as a Styrofoam cup so if you like that look fine. I did paint mine white.

A: Yes, these tiles are suitable for bathrooms. Since the water does not bother the material they are made of, people have been using them with great success. You also caulk the seams and paint the tiles to add extra layer of protection.
