Q:Our garage header is triple LVL beams 20 inch x 1 3/4 inch across 19 ft span. Eight years ago the previous owners wrapped lower sides and bottom with flashing. We recently discovered poor workmanship has allowed rain run-off to get behind flashing and accumulate inside flashing. Bottom of header has lost 1/2 to 1 inch due to rot along much of mid-length. No sign of sagging, but we want to restore strength by strapping backside with a 10-foot length of 1 1/2 x 1/4 steel flat bar w/ 5” x 1/4 inch lag screws on 8-inch centers, 2” above bottom edge. Will that suffice?

Answer This Question
A: You need an engineer for a proper answer, but it sounds insufficient. When steel is used to reinforce beams, it typically consists of flitch plates that have the same depth as the wood joists, and the steel is sandwiched between two joists to form the built-up beam. With a narrow strap, you probably have too much load concentrated on too small an area.

Answer This Question
A: I researched quite a bit if the studs can be used outdoors. Called the manufacturer, they said not recommended for outdoor use - not glued together with waterproof glue. Also the studs are covered with a waxy film to make them semi water repellant. I wanted to use them outside because they are very straight, strong and would not warp. I took a chance and went ahead and used them. I constructed an outdoor awning / pergola. First, I cut the studs to size for my project. Second, I sanded all sides, very well, with coarse "wet" sandpaper to get rid of the waxy surface. Third, let dry. Forth, assembled the project with waterproof glue at the joints and screwed together with exterior wood screws. I drove the screws through all the ends on the side of the studs to keep them from delaminating. Fifth, painted with one coat of primer. Sixth, finished with 3 coats of a custom color of Sherwin - Williams LOXON XP Acrylic Coating. Cost about $50.00 per gallon, expensive but very durable. The awning / pergola has been up outside for 1 year thru sun, rain, snow and temperatures from 10 to 100 F degrees. There has not been any expansion - contraction cracks, warping or paint delamination. It has only been a year, so far I am happy. I would not guarantee anyone else's outcome. Hope this helped, good luck.
