Q:Hello, I'm looking to insulate my drop ceiling with Soniguard. I know this is designed to sit on top of the ceiling tiles, but would the weight of the insulation require me to add extra support wiring for the drop ceiling structure? Or is this designed to work with an existing drop ceiling structure? My ceiling tiles are about .5 inches thick... and seem pretty beefy already. Would the .8 lbs per tile would not be too much for the existing structure to bear? Many thanks!

    Answer This Question

A:  Ceilume's Soniguard Drop Ceiling Insulation is a non-woven polyester fiber material that is meant to be installed on top of ceiling tiles in a suspended ceiling grid. It is not suitable for any direct mount installation on garage doors or walls. Consult with the Building Material Pros at your local Home Depot store to find a material suitable for insulation your garage door.

      Answer This Question

A:  Ceilume's Soniguard Drop Ceiling Insulation is only meant to be placed on top of lay-in ceiling tiles. It can not be adhered to a ceiling or wall by itself. Consult with the Building Material Pros at your local Home Depot store to see if they have any products that are right for your needs.

A:  You just lay this product directly on top of the tile, no need to secure it with anything.

A:  Soniguard Drop Ceiling Insulation rests on top of a ceiling tile and gravity holds it in place. There is no need to glue or tape the insulation to the ceiling tile.

A:  Yes, it just sits on the tiles

                  A:  Of course it would!!

A:  Ceilume has done testing to determine NRC, STC, and CAC values for Soniguard but have not done testing for 2 layers of Soniguard, so we don't have actual data to show exact performance. Since Ceilume ceiling tiles are relatively thin, one layer of Soniguard is all we recommend for use with our tiles. If you're placing insulation on top of an existing mineral fiber tile, using rolled or batt insulation might be a more cost effective way to reduce sound.

A:  Yes, adding Ceilume Soniguard to your existing mineral fiber ceiling tiles will increase the STC and the R value of your ceiling.
