Q:why does the #6 have a 9/64 pilot? That's too big for drilling a pilot hole into wood for a #6 screw.
by|Jan 31, 2024

Answer This Question

A:  Hello Snarltoof, This set is a tapered set and for that reason the pilot is 9/64" for a #6 (hard wood). There is a straight bit for #6 and it's a 3/32" pilot (soft wood).

Q:Being that the bits are tapered, if you are connecting 2 pieces of 3/4 in plywood will the screw enter the top board without needing to be screwed? Basically only have the teeth of the screw in the bottom board?

                    Answer This Question

A:  You will need to screw through both boards. Be careful to use the correct size bit as to the screw size and how far into the top board you countersink the screw head. The screw will make its own threads into the top board as you screw into place.

A:  It really depends on the screw you are using. Technically, these bits are designed for traditional wood screws, which have the same/similar taper as these bits. So they should grab both pieces without splitting the wood. But if you use screws like an all purpose straight screw it will be a different experience with these bits. Depending how long they are, many of those types of screws will have no threads on the first portion of the shank below the screw head anyway so you may not be grabbing the first piece anyway. Another option in these situations is just drill a pilot in the first piece that will show and don't worry as much about the second piece where the screw will grab. That way you don't use the fatter part of the taper. But it really depends on what screw you are using and the material (hard wood, soft, etc.).

A:  Ideally you want the top board to allow it to be pulled tight to the bottom board- threads in top board are not needed (except to keep in alinement ) use the size for the size of screw you are using

A:  #8 1 ¹/2 inch. Using the middle bit for #8 wood screws. I may just need to slide the counter sink up a millimeter or 2 or 3

A:  This would depend on 2 things. First, the size (#8,#10,etc) screw and length of the screw. Second, the bits can be adjusted to the depth needed to match the screw length. When is doubt take some scrap plywood and experiment with different depth settings and screw sizes. Also, are you using wood glue on the joint?

Q:I see these are tapered like traditional wood screws but most of the screws sold at depot are not tapered and have a straight shank. Is it advisable to use these bits with non tapered screws?

A:  I still use these for drywall screws so I do not split out boards. Like you can with no pre drilling. Just don't go all the way in. And use the smallest bit you can.

A:  The pointed end of a wood screw is tapered (Long Screws have straight shanks) these bits will work for all pilot holes in wood

A:  Yes they are good with any screw. These are very nice bits for wood. Just size it right, meaning don't go too deep or too fat keeping in mind the taper. You can also adjust the depth of the hole. Like if I am making holes in 3/4 ply I will put the countersink way up on the flutes and just pre-drill/countersink the plywood and not worry about pre-drilling the soft 2x4 beneath. I will say I rarely use the large sized bits and on many of the newer fasteners such as GRK or SPAX even they say no pre-drilling needed on the box. For a finish project or any hardwood it is still a good idea to pre-drill. I mostly use a small bit and/or depth I know is too small for the screw just so I know the screw will grab in the right spot while leaving enough wood below for a tight fit.

A:  Yes. There are 3 different sizes so be aware that you are using the appropriate one for the screw. I use this constantly for pre-drilling to avoid splitting the wood.
