Q:I currently have Nutone 696N bathroom fans and would like to replace all of them. If the measurement is 7 1/2" x 7 1/4" x 3 5/8" will this model or any other model fit as a direct replacement?

        Answer This Question

A:  In addition to the measurements I would check the decibel level and power of the fan. The Panasonic Whisper line is very quiet and powerful whereas most bathroom fans are loud and low power.

        by|Jun 20, 2020

A:  For any exhaust fan replacement, you must compare the exact physical measurements and AC load requirements of the existing unit with the replacement unit (i.e. length, height, width, and AC amps power ratings)! If the measurements are not identical you may be able to compensate by adding or removing wood, sheetrock, etc. If the replacement unit AC loads are not equal to or less than the existing unit, then hire an electrician. Any alterations can be much more time consuming and expensive. Another option is to replace an existing worn-out/noisy exhaust fan motor assembly by determining the exact model number of the existing unit, and searching for a fan replacement. In all replacement/repair cases, verify you have shut off the applicable AC power supply circuit breaker before servicing. ~sb

Q:Manual says do not install in a place where temperature may exceed 40C (104F). does it mean it can't be installed in the attic/ceiling of a bathroom? I am sure an attic goers beyond 104F during the hot months of summer!

A:  This is a question that should be directed toward the manufacturer engineers. Note the link for contacting the technical group. https://www.deltabreez.com/ It is possible that since a fan could possibly run for an extended period of time if placed on a on/off switch, that there could be an over heating condition if the fan is placed in an environment that exceeds the recommended maximum temperature.

Q:Does this draw air or just circulate? I just moved into an apt. and I tried the tissue test and it just blew it around. The maintenance man said that's the way it works.

A:  You have to connect the output opening to a hose and run that out of your apartment. If you are replacing one the hose should be there from the previous fan.

A:  The device name states "50 CFM Wall or Ceiling Bathroom Exhaust Fan". To properly circulate, i.e."Exhaust", you must have entry and exit circulation points. In a bathroom or other application, ideally slightly open a window away from the unit, and the exhaust port of the unit must be directed outdoors using aluminum ducting with an exterior grill. Most bathrooms have a slight opening under the entry door; assuming the house or apartment is not completely sealed, you will have some circulation, but not as robust as with a slight opening in the room with the unit. With exhaust fans, you get what you pay for (i.e. how long the exhaust motor assembly lasts), so research the major brand name reviews (Panasonic, Broan, etc.). Hope this helps... ~ SB

A:  This is an exhaust fan that connects to duct leading to an outside wall or to the attic. It draws air out if properly connected, and runs quietly. To replace an existing exhaust fan it needs to match the rough opening in the ceiling or wall. A job for a handyman with some basic electrical skills.

A:  Maintenance man is incorrect. There is a flap (located in the black plastic exhaust duct near the top of the fan assembly) that the moving air should open when the fan is turned on allowing the air to travel through the duct work and out. I discovered it was easy to distort the fan duct during installation and to jam that flap shut. I had to be careful, but installed it properly. When flap is jammed shut, the fan simply pushes the air back into the room and is useless. As long as the flap can open (and any addition duct work and the vent through the outside wall is not clogged) the fan should pull the tissue towards the fan.

A:  The exhaust fan should draw air into the grill of the unit and discharge it out of the room. If order for the fan to work properly and draw air in, it must have a clear exhaust duct to an outside space. If the fan is not drawing air in, most likely the exhaust duct is either plugged, collapsed or was incorrectly installed.

A:  Not sure where it says "no cut" installation. This fan is definitely a ceiling mount fan and requires a hole in the ceiling for mounting and installation.

A:  Yes, it needs to have a duct to the exterior. 3" flex is the easiest but smooth sheet metal duct is better flow for longer runs.

A:  The side of the fan has an exhaust coupling for a duct - I believe that it's a 4" diameter. HD has a corrugated metal flex duct that I used to vent the exhaust.
