Answer This Question
A: I assume so. Not an engineer. Any steel can be hardened if the correct techniques are used. Use discretion if you not knowledgeable. Why buy something you need to alter, when you may be able to buy what you want by looking for more specific specifications. Unless you need to fabricate then hard for you purpose.

Answer This Question
A: The Everbilt 6 in. x 18 in. 16-Gauge Plain Steel Sheet Metal is 16-gauge low carbon steel, not stainless steel. 440 is a type of stainless steel.
by|Oct 28, 2023
A: NO. Read the description; it is plain steel. 440 is a grade of Stainless Steel. If you read the item title, it's general description, or look at the full specifications not once is it described as "Stainless Steel" nor does the number 440 appear anywhere.

Q:Can this be used safely as a lid over the top of a Pit BBQ with indirect heat of 200-380 degrees below it? Plus if supported on all 4 sides is the center stable enough to cover a 20" by 20" opening without bowing down.

Answer This Question
A: This plain sheet metal could be used as a lid and it shouldn’t bow as long as nothing is put on top of it. With the sheet metal being 16g it will get very hot very quickly.

A: Yes/no/maybe ? it depends on the purpose. As a safety cover to put a fire out if there?s an unexpected need to do that, yes. As a cover for continuous use, stiffen it with 1/2? angle riveted every 4-6?, edge and diagonal +hi temp paint or it will rust.

Q:What's the difference between this "steel sheet metal" and "plain sheet metal" ?

Answer This Question
A: There is no difference. The material is steel and magnetic. While it is coated to prevent corrosion, that coating needs to be removed with a degreaser before painting. It is what I would call mild steel it is not high strength with I suppose 29,000-30,000 psi ultimate tensile strength and is ductile so that it can be bent without cracking. It can be cut with a hacksaw, nibbler or shears. Standard drill bits work although using a center punch is recommended to keep the bit from walking. .

A: I use a vise+sawzall, 3? air powered cufoff wheel for small cuts, and high speed air saw for inside corners. There are circular saw ferrous metal blades - table, slide, arm saw are better than a hand held. Clamp the work down.

A: Yes, I would recommend cleaning it first with Rubbing Alcohol to remove any oils, then use primer and finally paint.

A: I used a primer first before painting. No rust from the weather so far.

A: This material is lightly oiled to prevent it rusting in the store. I would recommend cleaning it with a good degreaser (acetone) and scuffing it with steel wool or sandpaper afterward before painting it. I'd be inclined to use paint like the Rustoleum line of products to keep it rust-free I actually bedded my sample into a patch on the floor with epoxy and I took similar precautions. Since the patch was indoor and covered by laminated flooring rust wasn't much of an issue. If you are making it into reinforcements for something like a planter box that would be expected to get wet I think I'd definitely take the recommended precautions. The material is mild steel and not stainless.

A: It is mild steel and has a light coating of oil to prevent it rusting in the store. Use acetone or similar degreaser and scuff with steel wool or fine sandpaper. The finish is good as is so use a wet-dry sandpaper. Use a rust-inhibiting paint Rustoleum or equal.
