A: Hi there, Tooldude! Thanks for your inquiry! The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommend several places to mount a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm; on every floor including finished attics and basements, inside and outside sleeping area, or at the top of first-to-second floor stairway and on the basement ceiling near the entry of the stairs. Smoke alarms are not designed to work in extreme heat or cold, or in areas where smoke and dust are common, like unfinished attics or garages, as it could damage the sensors of the alarm.
