A:  Due how thick the mil is, this item is commonly used as a vapor barrier in many situations. The longevity of it would be based on other components (chemical exposure, etc.) for which we would need additional information. Please contact your local Home Depot store for further assistance.

A:  Not sure what the perm rating is but I can tell you that this product is THICK. I can't see any water vapor getting through it so to use, perhaps, as a vapor barrier would most likely work.

                  by|Sep 24, 2019

A:  Please contact your local Home Depot to obtain a specification sheet for this item. The perm rating will be listed on the specification sheet.

A:  Yes. We bought this specifically to use as a moisture barrier under our vinyl plank. It was easy to install and the floor has been down for over 1 ½ years in the bedrooms. We have no complaints. However, we did find out afterwards from a contractor that since this was an older home, it was not necessary to put a moisture barrier down if the moisture readings were low. This is because the concrete would be cured and chances of moisture were slim to none. So in the main room of the house, we did not put it down. No problems there either. Hope this helps!

A:  I used it as a moisture barrier in my crawl space and it’s working great. I think it would work but they do have products for flooring that would be better, this would be the less expensive route.

Q:Has anyone used this as a vapor barrier under LVP (luxury vinyl plank) flooring? The manufacturer of my flooring (Coretec) recommends a 6 mil poly vapor barrier when installing on concrete and I'm wondering if this would work?

A:  WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY CUSHIONING AND COULD CAUSE A CONDENSATION BUILD UP UNDER THE PLASTIC SHEETING RESULTING IN MOLD AND INSECTS.

A:  Treesmiths, your answer confuses me. "If you do not adhere to the flooring manufacturers recommendations, they may not honor their warranty." Exactly, the manufacturer advises to install a 6 mil polyethylene vapor barrier. It's my understanding that this product is a 6 mil polyethylene vapor barrier - hence my question if anyone else has used it!?! "This product would have seams and could allow moisture in, where the 6 mil would not, as it comes in 12 foot wide, versus this at 3 feet wide." What? This product is 20 ft. wide, not 3. Seams would be taped. I'm totally confused - what product are you saying would be better or less expensive?

A:  Yes, this is exactly what we used it floor. The one roll was MORE than enough to do an entire 1800 sq' basement under our new LVP, even allowing for generous overlap of the strips.

A:  If you do not adhere to the flooring manufacturers recommendations, they may not honor their warranty. And if you are charging an installation fee to a client, you could be liable for the potential damages. This product would have seams and could allow moisture in, where the 6 mil would not, as it comes in 12 foot wide, versus this at 3 feet wide. Plus, pricing this by the square foot compared to the 6 mill plastic would be more $$. I don't see the benefits. What is the motivation?

A:  Yes. 6 mil is plenty if its sandwiched between concrete and cork. Only time you need thicker plastic is if it is exposed e.g. crawl space vapor barrier
