A: Yes, but not direct burial. It must be in a water tight non-metallic conduit (like pvc pipe) that is at least 1/2" larger (ID) than the OD of the CSST. It must be vented to the surface, have no fittings inside the conduit, and (if attached to the home's black iron gas distribution system) be bonded. Suggest you consider HOME-FLEX Underground products for outdoor underground use. Both Design & Installation Manuals can be found at homeflex.com/resources and FAQs are available on the product's page on homedepot.com. Or you can call (661) 257-3923 x1026 (Dave) or x1010 (Jon) M-F 8a-5p Pacific time.

Q:Can the pipe straps used be stainless steel? Or do they have to be plastic? (Attic installation).

Answer This Question
A: Hi, Curt - Most national codes dictate that metal strapping is to be used. However, local codes may state otherwise and should be referenced and plastic can be used if approved. We'd suggest just going with the metal strapping.

Q:Non standard use for this material! Could I strip off the plastic coating and drill holes in the stainless steel tubing to place around the perimeter of a fire pit to add forced ventilation? Essentially I'm just asking if the tube could survive in a fire.

A: Hi, JustJustin - What you described would be considered "experimental" and outside what the product was designed to do and, therefore, would not be warrantable. To answer your question, the ss tubing has an approximate 2400f degree melting point. The yellow jacket has an approximate 350f degree melting point. Given that a typical fire would burn at 600-800 degrees, the jacket would certainly melt but the ss should remain intact.

Q:Can this be ran approx 125 feet from the propane tank to the house? It will be underground inside of pvc pipe until it reaches the house. At that point it will be hooked to the black gas pipe already in the house.

A: Hi, Dave - Yes it can with certain provisions. It must be one continuous run of CSST (no fittings), it needs to be bonded to the grounding buss bar in the electrical enclosure using 6g or heavier copper wire; it needs to be vented to the surface outside the structure, the PVC conduits needs to be at least 1/2" larger ID than the OD of the CSST (the OD of our 1/2" CSST is .76").

Answer This Question
A: Hi, JPC24 - No, this does not have an arc-resistant jacket. It must be bonded using a 6 gauge (or heavier) copper wire back from the CSST fitting or black iron gas pipe to the grounding buss bar in the electrical enclosure. See section 4.10 of our CSST System Design & Installation Manual available at homeflex.com/resources for full details.

Answer This Question
A: Hi, James - Our CSST products are made to pass many codes and standards as noted in our System Design & Installation manual available at homeflex.com. Some municipalities may have product restrictions so we always recommend you check your local codes prior to purchase and installation. We understand that Maryland recently changed their codes re CSST relative to new installation vs. remodel / retrofit projects. It is not allowed for use in new installations but MAY be allowed for retrofit projects based on a CSST / other material percentage.

A: Call your county building permit department. My assumption is yes, but don’t forget that county codes can be weird and vary across county lines. Additionally, your particular county probably has codes about specific ways this needs to be installed.

Q:Can this be ran through cinder block to gas fireplace
by|Feb 27, 2023

Answer This Question
A: Hi, James - Yes with some provisions. 1. When going through the block, you should protect the CSST by using a PVC sleeve. 2. If exposed to the elements outside, it should be protected either by a wrap of self-adhesive silicon tape or a sleeve of PVC that is at least 1/2" larger than the OD of the CSST. 1/2" CSST is .76", so a 1" sleeve will do. Once inside the fireplace, it is alright to remove the protective yellow jacket. We invite you to view and save the HOME-FLEX CSST System Design & Installation manual available at homeflex.com / resources.
