Q:Now that wink needs subscription how are you using this?

A: I don't understand what you mean by "subscription??" I just put installed my fans, flipped the wall switch for current and then control the lights and fans from the remotes.I have 1 in my home office and the other 1 in my "Man cave/ dressing room.They work just fine!

A: At the moment we are paying the subscription on that ceiling fan but after buying a brand new ceiling fan I discovered that Hampton bay has updated remotes that work strictly with google or Alexa and will probably keep the ceiling fan and just replace the remote inside eventually.

A: Yes, you can just use this as a normal remote. When connectivity between the hub and the part that goes the canopy gets out of whack, the remote works just fine.

A: It does, but you need to install a custom device handler and custom smart app for full functionality. Easy to do. Quick search on google will find those pretty quick along with directions. Also, but a GE Zigbee plug and plug it in between the fan and smartthings hub. It act as a repeater. That helps with keeping it connected to your smartthings network

A: Thank you for your question. No, this remote is not designed to work with SmartThings. Additionally, Wink now requires a subscription for the smart features to work. We would suggest the Universal WiFi remote (model # 99434) which is compatible with SmartThings as well as Google and Alexa.

A: Yes. To use wink at all there will be a fee. There is limited success doing custom code in SmartThings. I have 2. I would look at other products if lookin at something other than wink and the monthly fee.

The remote will operate as a standard remote without the subscription, but to use any of the smart technology, you will need a Wink subscription. We would If you are looking for a Smart remote, we would suggest the Universal Smart WiFi Remote (model #99434). The Wifi remote will connect with Alexa, Google, and SmartThings. Once connected with Alexa or Google Home you will be able to control a fan and lights with your voice. There is also an app available with no subscription needed.

A: No, you can use other platforms for this like smartthings, Hubitat, home assistant and likely others I’m not familiar with using. Any of those platforms will offer far more than Wink
