A:  I agree. This is necessary to complete your assembly. However if you have cabinets on both sides the frame will stabilize your system. You could complete your assembly and put a temporary work surface in place.

A:  If you're asking, "Is this stainless steel surface 1-1/2" thick along its width & depth?" Yes, it is. If you're asking, "Is this surface 1-1/2"-thick stainless steel along its width & depth? Not even close. It's 20ga (~1mm) steel wrapping MDF (~38mm)
