Q:Is the Blue Chip Jr. Butterfly Bush toxic to dogs?
by|Apr 25, 2017
2 Answers
Answer This Question

A:  Hi Lou. University of California lists the butterfly bush as nontoxic to humans, and ASPCA has no data suggesting dogs, cats or other pets will get more than a stomach ache if they eat the plant. HOWEVER, do not confuse butterfly bush with shrubs commonly called butterfly weed or milkweed (Asclepias spp.), native plants that attract butterflies and other insects with showy flower clusters. Unlike the butterfly bush, butterfly weed is toxic and can cause poisoning or kill children or pets. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Rick_HD_OC

A:  Hi Lou, Butterfly Bushes are not known to be toxic to humans or pets, so they should not make dogs sick if they happened to ingest them. If you have any additional questions, feel free to call us at (734) 654-7485. Thanks, Hailee

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi Snazzy, Blue Chip Jr. Butterfly Bush is drought resistant and grows best in well-drained soil so that its roots don't become overly moist. It will grow to a mature size of about 1.5 feet tall and wide. Hope this helps! Asia

A:  I have two of these plants. One in the dryer, not very fertile area of my garden and one in the area that gets watered often and has great soil. The one in the dryer area does much better and is bushier with more flowers. They are three years old and 2&1/2 feet tall.

A:  Hi Harry, Blue Chip Jr. Butterfly Bush grows to a mature height of 18 inches and a width of 20 inches, making it a more compact shrub than many traditional butterfly bushes. It will remain short, growing no more than 1.5 feet tall. In the right growing conditions it will also be covered in beautiful fragrant flowers. Hope this helps! Asia

A:  My plant is planted in a bed mixed w/other bushes in full sun on a stone retaining wall. I give them all extra water in August when we have little to no rain and they are all doing fine.

A:  Hi Jaxy, The Blue Chip Jr. Buddleia is drought tolerant and needs about 6 or more hours of sun a day, so it should do fine for you in central Texas. Just make sure to keep it watered appropriately so that the soil is moist, but not too dry or wet. If you have any additional questions, feel free to call us at (734) 654-7485. Thanks, Hailee

                                Answer This Question

A:  Hi Stellargal, Generally, the best time to plant is in the spring or fall. Summer planting can be too stressful for plants because of the extreme heat, especially in Arizona. There are two main growing seasons in Phoenix: from mid February until the end of May, and from September to mid November. Make sure the threat of frost is gone when planting in February. Also, be sure that your plants have enough time to root out before frost in the fall. If you have any questions please call our hotline (734) 654- 7485. Best regards, Fallon

                                  Answer This Question

A:  Hi Maemae, Avoid pruning your Blue Chip Jr. Buddleia in the fall. It is recommended to wait until your Blue Chip Jr. Buddleia leafs out in the spring before pruning it. In some springs, you may have to prune it back to the ground if you have a difficult winter. This will keep it looking great! If you have any additional questions, feel free to call us at (734) 654-7485. Thanks, Hailee
