Answer This Question

A:  You don't need to control the "fan motor" itself, you just need to supply constant power to it. The unit itself will turn the fan on/off as needed based on water temp.

A:  I don’t really see a question here. So let me go through the logic behind how a zone with a kick space heater operates and perhaps that will help. The zone thermostat gets wired to a relay. When there is a call for heat, he relay closes. As a result, the circulation pump moves hot water through the zone. The kick space heater has a constant power supply. In a sense it is always plugged in. When the hot water being pumped by the circulator reaches the kick space heater, its internal aqua stat senses the presence of hot water and turns on the blower. When the zone thermostat is satisfied the system shuts down in reverse order. The thermostat opens causing the relay to open. The flow of power to the pump stops causing the flow of hot water to stop. The blower in the kick space heater cools down the coil causing the aqua stat to open shutting off power to the blower. That is the way it is done. A thermostat is not controlling or wired to the kick space heater. The blower comes on when hot water is present. Chris 978 651 3301

Q:Is it possible to create one loop in your home with a thermostat and a pump attached to each individual hydronic unit so that each room has its own control without creating a zone and a loop for each room?

          Answer This Question

A:  Today the most common piping strategy for hydronic systems in the US is to pipe the rooms in series on one zone. The water goes through each room as it makes a trip through the zone. The heat loads for each room are calculated. By installing the appropriate amount of heating capacity in each room the zone is balanced. The temperature stays the same in each room on the zone and the zone is treated as a whole. It is possible to pipe a system where each room is essentially its own zone. It is not often done. That level of control is not often required or deemed necessary. It would also make the system more expensive and complex. However it can be done. There are a few different piping strategies that could be used. Prior to the Second World War plumbers would use mono-flow or reverse return piping. There would be a main loop and each radiator would become its own loop off the main loop. The individual radiators would have either a manual or automatic valve controlled by a thermostat. It is still done this way in much of Europe and Asia. Today the strategy most often used in the US for individual room control is home run piping. Each room is supplied by small PEX lines that run back to a feed and return manifolds. The two manifolds are one zone and the individual home run loops are controlled by a thermostat tied to an actuator. This is all very hard to describe without visual aids. If you put the following SKU in the search box on the Home Depot site a Pensoti brand radiator will come up. 304957138 If you scroll down the product listing page you will come to a section entitled “Product Details” where you will find PDF’s of the product documents. It you open the one entitled Use and Care Manual you will find illustrations of all these piping methodologies. If you have further questions please feel free to call. Chris 978 651 3301

Q:Can you use a wall thermostat to cut the power to the unit in the event that the room with this heater gets too hot when other areas of the zone still requires heat? What is the BTU output difference between the fan at high speed and the fan turned off?

            Answer This Question

A:  That is normally not how systems are set up but I guess you could. You would be controlling line voltage (120 Volts) so you would want to make sure you use a line voltage thermostat. Most thermostats are built to operate on 24 volts as most control systems are low voltage. You need a line voltage thermostat. These are often used to control electric heaters. But keep in mind this would only be acting as a high limit. It would not be turning the unit on, it would simply cut power to the blower based on a high limit. You would still need a control strategy to turn the zone on.

Q:If left in the on position, will the unit kick out heat automatically when needed based on it's internal thermostat temperature, or do I need to bend down and turn the unit on every time I want heat?

              Answer This Question

A:  Great question. In answer to your question here is how this both this unit and a hydronic heating zone operates. The zone thermostat will close when room temperature is below set point. This will complete the low voltage control circuit energizing the relay. The relay will then feed 120 volt power to the circulation pump. When the pumped how water reaches the kick space heater, the aqua stat in the kick space heater will sense the presence of hot water and allow power to go to the blower motor. It the switch happens to be on high speed, the motor will run in high speed. If it is in low speed it will run in low speed. And if it’s left in the off position, the blower will not come on even though hot boiler water is present. Note that the kick space heater is not wired back to the boiler nor does it communicate with anything else. The kick space heater has a constant power supply and comes on when specific things occur in the performance cascade that result in hot water being present in the coil. When the zone thermostat is satisfied, the flow of hot water is stopped. The blower action cools off the coil. The aqua stat will no longer sense the presence of heated water, so power is cut to the blower. The biggest reason why kick space heater do not work as expected is that the piping is not done correctly, so hot boiler water does not flow properly. A:  It will come on and shut off automatically based on the temperature of the water. When the zone calls for heat and the water circulates, the fan will kick on when the set temperature is reached and will shut off when the temperature gets below the temperature threshold.

Q:Does the front grill come off for cleaning? I don't see any screws to remove

                  Answer This Question

A:  No the front grill does not come off for cleaning. Keep in mind, the brands with removal grills can not be serviced from the front as that is not where the critical service areas are. The solution to this, for all brands, is in the installation. The proper way to install kick space heater is not to hard pipe it. Meaning do not bring ridged pipe all the way to it. Instead a hose kit should be utilized to attached the unit to the ridged piping. This allows the unto be serviced easily. The screws holding the kick space heater to the kick space are removed. The unit is then slid out from under the cabinet. Following service it can be slid back into place. In fact in one of the best installations i have ever seen the installer utilized draw slides on both sides of the kick space heater. It could simply be slid out like a draw. It was a little excessive and I actually think it was done to form a secret hiding place. But it was an ingenious idea. At some point over the life time of any brand kick space heater it will need to be serviced; this is normal. As a plumber I can not count the number of times I have been asked to fix one the that has been hard piped in place before the cabinets were installed. In that situation it always troubles me that I have to cut out the sink base above to gain access. If the original plumber had acted with forethought I would not have to disfigure the cabinets to gain access. A sample of a kick space heater hose kit would be Home Depot SKU 202809213. If you put that in the search box on the Home Depot site it will come up. Regardless of brand you ultimately select it is a best practice to install with future service in mind.

A:  The unit needs to be installed with "Quick-Fit Hose Kit for Toekick Heater". This has flexible hose for the heat connections. Also make sure the electrical is installed with a loop. You then remove the 2 screws that mounts the unit in the baseboard and the entire unit will neatly slide out for cleaning.

                      Answer This Question

A:  There are two issues with that. First, it was done so infrequently that the manufacture let its approvals relative to use with potable hot water expire. Therefore the product lacks the necessary approvals. Second, potable water in the United States is limited to max temperature of 120 F. If you look at the specification sheet you will see that this unit is not even rated for water temperatures that low. Even at 130 F, which is listed, the heat output is roughly half of what you would get with 180 F water. Hydronic heating systems are typically designed around water temperatures that are much hotter than potable water temperatures.
