Q:Can this be used as a paint primer on a very old plaster wall?

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi Reno- The PRO-999 (Rx-35) can be top-coated with a high-quality latex paint. The primer dries clear, therefore it will not provide any hide like a traditional paint primer. It is designed to lock down porous surfaces and provide an appropriate base for paint or wallcovering. Due to the variations in types and ages of plaster, ROMAN suggests a compatibility test. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to conduct the patch test: Preparation: Ensure the plaster surface is clean and dry. Remove any loose paint or particles from the area where you'll be conducting the test. Cover the surrounding area with a plastic sheet or tarp to protect it from accidental spills or splatters. Mix the primer prior to application. Application: Apply a small amount of the PRO-999 (Rx-35) primer to the clean plaster surface using a paintbrush or roller. Keep the layer thin and even. Avoid thick applications as they may affect the test results. Drying time: Allow the primer to dry completely (3-12 hours). Be patient and avoid touching or disturbing the test area during this time. Evaluation: After the primer has dried, inspect the test area for any signs of poor adhesion, bubbling, blistering, cracking, or other undesirable reactions. Check to see if the primer has adhered well to the plaster surface and if it forms a strong bond. Optional: For a more thorough test, you can perform additional checks such as adhesion tests or applying light pressure with your fingernail to see if the primer easily comes off the surface. Interpretation: Based on the results of the patch test, you can determine the compatibility of the PRO-999 Rx-35 primer with the plaster surface. If the primer adheres well and shows no signs of incompatibility, it should be safe to proceed with using it over the entire plaster surface. Keep in mind that this patch test is a preliminary assessment, and while it can provide useful information, it may not account for all potential compatibility issues that could arise over time or with changes in environmental conditions. Always follow the instructions and recommendations for surface preparation and product application. If in doubt, consider reaching out to customer support.

Q:Can this be used to prime veneer plaster on blueboard for painting?

        Answer This Question

A:  The PRO-999 Rx-35 is designed to lock down and seal porous surfaces. The product will penetrate the substrate and may help prevent topcoats of paint or wallcovering adhesive from re-wetting or emulsifying the porous surface which can cause bubbling or cracking. The PRO-999 (Rx-35) dries with a slight residual tack and it dries clear. It can be painted over with a high-quality latex paint. ROMAN has not tested every application and every type of plaster to be able to provide guidance. We suggest doing a compatibility test in an inconspicuous area prior to starting the whole project. Thank you!

            Answer This Question

A:  Hello, Most modern wallcoverings will require an adhesive after priming. Please refer to the installation instructions provided by your wallcovering manufacturer for the appropriate type of adhesive. The PRO-999 Rx-35 is formulated to penetrate and help seal skim coat and other porous surfaces. It has a minimum dry time of 3 hours; 12 hours is optimal prior hanging your wallcovering. Q:Can I use this on plaster walls that have had wallpaper stripped as prepping for new wallpaper?

              Answer This Question

A:  Hi Jaymi-The PRO-999 (Rx-35) is designed to seal and lock down porous surfaces such as residual wallpaper paste, skim coat, torn drywall, spackling, and joint compound. It is formulated to minimize bubbling, cracking, or peeling of a top coat and to prepare a surface for new wallpaper. There are many different types and ages of plaster which can make determining compatability difficult. To test the compatibility of the PRO-999 (Rx-35) primer over plaster, you can perform a simple patch test. This test will help you determine if the primer adheres well to the plaster surface and if there are any adverse reactions or compatibility issues between the two materials. If in doubt, consider reaching out to customer support or consulting with a professional contractor for further advice.
